Header and Cat for Cavalier

Hello, I just bought A header for my 95' Cavalier and i noticed there was no way I was going to put it on without having to take my cat off because the Header tube was to long coming from the header and just to add to it, the cat was so rusted that there was no way I was going to get that thing off without having to cut it off. I was just wondering for all of you Cavalier fanatics, Was it ok for me to take my CAT off with a High flow header? or should I go to an exhaust pros dealer and have them put the cat back on? Someone told me that if I did not put my cat back on my Engine would blow up.

you will get check engine lights, but it wont blow up. Id just take it to a muffler shop and have them put it together.

Id suggest investing in a high flow cat too, and maybe a high flow muffler too. On second thought, just get the system redone- header back. 2.25" piping all the way back. You'll have zoomzoom

agree, have it done right and all at once. I prefer all welded but others prefer flanges.

guarenteed you'll need a cat. or else you'll throw an o2 sensor code and a catalyst code from your ecu. a freeflowing cat would be your best bet but will give your engine a bit more of a raspier sound. one thing to remember is that you will probably throw off your air/fuel mixture so you might want to research into reprogramming it or finding a unit to calibrate it with. you'll notice that your gain will be minimal with the header until you tune it in.

My muffler bit the dust so I opted to replace it (I've only had my 90 z24 for a month) After getting under it and looking around I noticed that the section between the cat and the muffler was soft as was the intermeditary peice along with the springs.

Seeing as I can't just do the muffler I replaced the muffler, mid section cat ( added a hi-flow dynomax ) as well as a new intermeditary peice.

True the sound is a "touch" louder, but it doesn't sound nearly as soft ( mushy )as before. Once christmas comes around I'll add in my CAI and headers.

Interesting post perna00, I didn't know you could reprogram the computers. neat.

And to top it off I'm going to re-do thier website and pay for it that way. LOL.

Actually with there si no way to Tune just a set of headers. The Computer should automatically adjust. If he has a 95 with the ODBI then he can possibly chip it, But if its a late modle 95 or 96+ its ODBII and you can't reprogram it easily and cheeply. There are some places that will flash the ECU like RSM but thats only after you have for example one of their superchargers installed.

Cav componets are different then Perna's DSM. what will work with a DSm more than likly will not work with the cav. IE just going in and "tuning" it.
