urgent! question about ignition coil !!!

hey, i am planning to get a used 2000 maxima and tomorrow is the deal day--i would like to hear you guys' opinion before making the final decision:

it is gxe, 1st owner, and it has got 75k on that. what's tricky is that on the very morning i checked the car, according to the owner, the check engine light went on for the first time. then he took the car to nissan dealer from whom he bought it new. the next morning he told me that it was because of bad ignition coil and since they could not figure out which one went wrong, he spent $600 to replace all 6 of them. he also gave me the number of the guy who is doing to change in the garage.

i called the guy and asked whether the coils will go bad in the future and he told me that it will probably last me for a couple of years without causing any problem. besides, he told me that the owner took very good care of the car and besides the 6 replaced parts, the car was in excellent condition.

then i tried a google on line to see what happens after the replacement of the 6 coils and did not find a lot of info on "what happens AFTER the coils replacement"--is there anybody who had their maxima 6 ignition coils replaced? could you give me some idea about how long, normally, will they last me a long time? or, should i get it if nothing else has problem?

since i will give the owner answer tomorrow morning, therefore any input would be very very very appreciated!!!

if ur only concern is the coils, def buy the car. But theres more info we need like price/miles/model, etc. Generally, u'll be happy with the max.

hey, thanks for the reply yes, i think my only concern is the coils--the owner is askingfor about 8400$, the mileage is about 75000, model, gxl ( the lowest one among the 3)--i hope that the car runs good cause i am going to have the car inspected by a professional mechanic tomorrow. given these info, how do you think about it?thanks again!

Re: urgent! question about ignition coil !!!

the retail value of that car is somewhere around $12,000 in excellent condition. if the coils only had to be replaced once after 75,000 miles, i'd say your pretty safe for a while. it seems like a good deal to me supposing the car gets the ok from your mechanic.

Amber,
Joe here. I bought a 2000 Max with 46k and about 48k the engine lite came on. It too was the coil pak and it ran $600 to change. The service mgnr at the dealership said, "yes, Nissan had a problem with the original coil paks, and the newer version will hold up longer." I suggest that you also have the spark plugs change too which shoulb be included in the price you are quoting. $60 versuses $130 next time.

Re: urgent! question about ignition coil !!!

My mechanic said the same thing when i was getting my car. Thats the way Maxima's are built, a very good investment. (But it depreciates)
