Anyone know about Pioneer Premier DEX-99P??HELP!!

I purchased a used (probably stolen) Pioneer DEX-99P CD head unit. It didn't come with a wiring harness so I ordered one from Pioneer. When I installed it in my honda civic, the display wasn't viewable unless direct sunlight is hitting it, then you can almost make out the display. There was a yellow wire on the new harness marked "ILL", I assume it's short for illumination. I first tried hooking it up to the dimmer wire, no difference. Even when I hook it up to +12V.
I was reading the manual for the DEX-P9, it shows that the brightness of the display is adjustible with the remote. I don't have a remote and my stereo looks a lot older than the DEX-9P.
