What kind of Engine Oil is good?

2000 Mustang v6 3.8

I purchased this car three month ago.
And today I changed Engine oil form Speed Lube Pennzoil

sticker on my front glass was 5w30
but speed lube changed that 5w20

What is different?
Which is better oil?
do I need to change oil another place next time?

thank you~

Re: What kind of Engine Oil is good?

Those are the viscosity ratings, one is not "better" than the other. the deal with what temperature range they work in.

I don't know what the exact numbers are but I believe the 5 is -20*F, then the 30 would be able to withstand a higher temp than the 20.

The only better kind is synthetic oil. Several brands offer this; Redline, Royal Purple, Mobile 1, and maybe Amsoil. I use Royal Purple, but its a bit expensive for 6 quarts a pop.

my cars get nothing but Mobil 1. i live in southeastern michigan and use 10W-30. My race car will get either Mobil 1 15W-50 or Royal Purple.

I use Havoline 10W-30 in most of my stuff. I dont find synthetic cost effective enough to use. I would use the 5W-30 like the manual says or 10w-30. You should be ok with the 5W-20 but the extra insurance is nice

synthetic will actually gain you a trifle of power and increase longevity. switching to it from regular won't damage anything, but the other way around will. i used to drive an accord and switched to regular to save money. i didn't know that it would wreck my seals. fortuantely a can of Restore engine treatment sealed everything up (8 cyl formula). i shit you not.

I've been running Royal Purple but it's expensive as hell. I bought a case of 12 for $66. After that is used up I may look at Mobile1 if it's cheaper.
