Other stuff.

I know this is a car based forum, but do any of you do any other types of models, like military or bikes or, well anything really? I started out with aircraft and other military models, then progressed into cars. Is this the same for you guys? Also, do any of you do r/c cars aswell? Just wondering.

A few of the guys do Gundam models here, and a few military stuff!

I have done planes, but don't like the fact you make most of it and then ster spraying! Plus they are a funny shape to display!
I have done a few trucks, but they are dust traps!
So now I only want cars in my cabinet! They look very tidy as a collection!

The forum must stay cars only though!

I used to race RC cars, but now I just have a Tamiya Juggernaut 2 simply to throw round the garden. I wouldn't race again!!!

I have one model truck, the rest are cars. I was never interested in airplanes. I would like to do a motorcycle someday though.

I started out building sci-fi models; spaceships and junk. A lot of Star Wars stuff.

You know, we have a whole Remote Control Cars forum here on AF, too!

When i first stated to build models it was planes/boats and trucks. They take up to much room though

Cool, I didn't know about the r/c forum. I used to do r/c racing, but I stopped when my tamiya car got outdated, which was almost as soon as I bought it.

Right then, seeing as he's gone to Phillip Island and will be offline for a few days, here we go, are you sitting comfortably?

A couple of years ago Dan decided to build an R/C plane, nothing flashy, just a proper trainer plane. I had previously worked in a model shop, so knew a little about engines so when the time came to start it up Dan gave me a call. We got it running O.K. and went to a nearby industrial estate to taxi it up and down a little just to check everything was working properly, everything was alright. The next night we went to a nearby school (Dan knew the caretaker) to try to fly it on their playing field. Now, taxi-ing the plane across a grass field and giving it a little more welly than the night before it soon became clear that steering the plane while on the ground was more a matter of luck than judgement, it seemed to go where it wanted and not where Dan wanted. Finally he got up enough courage to open the throttle fully and before you knew it the plane was in the air. Once in the air, controlling it looked fairly easy but it was heading away towards the road at quite a pace, banking it to the right. it turned away from the road. Now, at this point I must admit, it didn't look as far away as the TREE to Dans right, but split seconds later plane and tree made contact. I haven't laughed so much for a long time, I think I nearly wet myself. The plane was well wedged in the branches of the tree about thirty feet above the ground and too far out from the trunk to be able to reach by climbing the tree. Dan went off to enlist the help of the local fire brigade who came back with a fireman with a rope with a weight on the end to try to lasoo the stricken model, a couple of hours later and in pitch darkness we gave up. Dan did get his model back a couple of days later, I can't remember how though. As far as I know, it hasn't been rebuilt yet!

I guess you probably had to be there really, the noise of the plane hitting the tree still makes me giggle now.

Sorry Dan.

Steve
