Steering column noisy???

We own a 2000 Dodge Caravan with 75,000 miles. When we turn the steering wheel we hear a creaking, clicking sound from the steering column. Took it to the dealer and they said "the sound is normal, its rust in the steering column and its not hurting anything". I don't trust their response???

HI,
We have a '99 Caravan and have heard the same thing as you, we have 68K on it and it does it most in the colder months, it hasn't affected anything though and we've just learned to live with. Good luck with it.

Re: Steering column noisy???

We have a 2000 GC and it also does this intermittently. Never had it looked at.

Re: Steering column noisy???

I've got a 97 Grand and it sounds just the same way, i do not believe it is a serious problem, nothing's been harmed in the whole 3-4 years its been doing it, just turn up a little music and your problems solved...

Might have an answer for you.

I have a 2001 Grand Caravan and I had an almost similar situation. After the light turned green, I'd start moving. When I gave it gas, the car would pull a tiny bit to the right and I would, of course, go to correct it. However, it was as if the wheel would get stuck just before reaching dead center and I would have to force it. You would hear (and feel) a kind of pop as the wheel moved freely again. I only had this problem when starting from a stop, not at any other time. I took it to the dealer (it was still under warranty 15 months & 40k miles ago) and they said there was a TSB for (I think it was) a wiring harness inside the column (for the cruise control maybe?). I hope this helps.

Re: Steering column noisy???

On the older models there was a bulletin about the steering column. Can't remember what though.
