CruiseControl Problem

My 2001 Durango seems to increase RPM's intermittingly during driving with the cruise control on. Dealer can never experience the same problem when they test drive. This is driving my nuts and was hoping someone else had the same problem and found the fix!

Try replacing the throttle position sensor. I had the same problem with my 99 andc it took care of the problem very easy to replace.

It will automatically do that in a situation where you are say, pulling something and come upon a hill and the truck needs to pull harder. The torque converter might unlock and so in turn the engine will rev up because of that.

If this isn't the case, then yes it's probably your throttle position sensor.

I have a 2000 R/T and does the same thing. Not pulling anything. Running on a smooth level road. Engine RPM's would periodically suddenly surge 100-200 rpms and suddenly drop back.

Dealer came back with the exact same result. They cannot get this to repeat itself when they test drive it. No codes, or errors from the computer either.

After reading and researching this in all the dodge forums, this seems to be the common answer to this problem. By replacing the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). Ordered this from Napa auto parts for $36.xx bucks.

Very simple to replace. Unplug the wiring harness. 2 allen screws to remove and the old assembly slides out. Slide the new assembly back on. and screw back in the 2 allen screws. Plug in the wiring harness.

All in all, a 5 minute procedure. Best to do this when the engine is cold unless you do not mind the heat!
