'96 Ram 1500 Hard Start
I need help, 1996 Dodge Ram 1500, 4WD, 5.2 V8, Auto, 98,000 mi.
I am having trouble with the starting of this truck. In the morning or after a longer period of time (8 hrs +) when I turn the key to start I get a crank and no ignition (10 or more rrrr, rrrr, Know the sound?). If I turn the key back to off and crank again the engine fires in 3 cranks. If I shut off and restart instant start. If I shut off for short period, less than 15 min, usually instant start. I am guessing this is a fuel delivery issue. I have removed air cleaner and sprayed intake with carb cleaner, run gas treatment through a few fillups. Also there is a little shudder or hesitation after putting in gear and acceleration after start. No hesitation after running. Where should I start to diagnose and solve? Winter coming soon and would like this little issue cleared up. Thanks |

Re: '96 Ram 1500 Hard Start
After letting it set over night, try turning the ingnition to the on position and let it set for 30 seconds without swtiching to the start position. This will give the fuel pump plenty of time to get fuel up to the injector rail (or carb).
Then try switching to the start position and see if it still takes 30 sec to start, or if it starts readily. If it starts fine after setting 30 seconds with the ignition in the run posistion before starting, it could well be the fuel pump or filter. |

Re: '96 Ram 1500 Hard Start
Sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Gimp is probably right, by letting the fuel pump have enough time to prime the engine. You may also want to see about getting new plugs.

Same Problem
I have the same problem on my 95. Did replacing the throttle sensor work?

Never thought of the TPS. Usually it's me saying that the TPS needs changing. I hate that damned thing.

Re: '96 Ram 1500 Hard Start
My dad had same problem with his 95 it was his fuel pump. but first check your gas lines if you can comeing from the tank to the tb. and make sure there are no leaks. you may even want to do a pressure test.
