small problem 1983 caprice

i just recently bought a 1983 caprice for $100.00 this is my third caprice, i love these cars. just a few days after i bought the car the headlights started "flashing", now this only happens after the car runs at temperature for about 20 mins. my first thought was the voltage reg but the alt still charges the battery. my first question, is the voltage reg seperate from the alt in 1983? and my second question, could this problem cause a slight surge in the car while driving down the road?

thanks in advance,

beat88ls

Re: small problem 1983 caprice

Sounds like a grounding problem to me and yes it could cause that. Also it the reg and alt are one piece. Well the voltage reg is contained in the alt. Check the output of the alt once the car is warmed up and at several different RPMs.
