Question slow cranking, sometimes?

I have a 92 K1500 5.0L 5sp w/ 184k mi on it. Sometimes the engine will crank just fine, and sometimes the engine will turn over slow ( like with a low battery). It happens with the motor hot or cold. I have changed the battery with the correct cranking amps, and the neg. battey cable. I'm figuring its the starter, or could there be something else I should look at. I appreciate any help before i buy a new starter. Thanks.

Re: slow cranking, sometimes?

You could verify the alternator is charging the battery correctly. Should be charging at about 14+ volts. Wouldn't be surprised if the starter was bad. I've got a little over 110K on my 1990 and I've had to replace it twice.

May even be a starter solenoid. But do what preston said first.

Re: slow cranking, sometimes?

if you r going to get a different starter, get a PG260 starter it is a smaller one cost bit more.Or just oil the brushings , change the brushes, clean the armature, check the drive and forks and check your soleniod and way you go.

I checked the alternator, and it's puting out over 14V. I'll play with the starter and solenoid this weekend, and post how it goes. Thanks for your insight.
