Internal Engine Cleaning Question

I have a '91 Camry with the 2.0 4 cyl
I have a problem with a "ticking" from the engine.
It seems to be from the valve train.
Recently I replaced the valve cover gasket. When the cover came off I was surprised to find alot of "goop" and varnish on the entire valve train.
I did the best I could to clean it off but there's tons of goop left.
I think the oil passages are clogged with goop.
Who has used an internal cleaner and how successful was it?
What type did you use? How about the old kerosene and oil trick?

Notice that you may still have to replace the valve covers and oil pick-up if the problem is bad enough.

Also, using this or any cleaner on a high-mileage engine is chancy.

I was wondering if anyone has used GM Top End cleaner. It's supposed to be able to clean off a lot of the carbon deposits found on the intake manifold of your engine.

Anybody try this on their Toyota?

GM Top End Cleaner was designed to be poured into a carburetor throat while the engine was running. You used to slowly put 1/2 the can in while the engine was running (with difficulty) and then dump the last 1/2 can in all at once and kill the engine, then let it sit for a while. Starting the engine after that was quite a show.

Put it in the gas and it's nothing but another solvent.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. For my car, I would have to suck it through one of the vacuum hoses, since it's not carburated. I was wondering if any one knew which one of the vacuum hoses would I use on a '92 Camry to clean it out. It's got about 95,000 miles. Would it be safe to use on such a high milage car?

I was gonna use it on my Pontiac, but I have my intake plenum sealed to the manifold with RTV...which I heard will be eaten away with GM Top End Cleaner.

I'm well aware of that "show". I guess I'll need to restart it in a relatively secluded area.

I used seafoam cleaner, and I can say it does work. Do not expect miracles, but the car runs better and iddling is improved. My Camry is a 1990 LE V6 w/ 110000mi.

I used the brake booster line to pur it into the TB. You have to do it VERY SLOWLY, or the engine will die. Just search for seafoam on google and read the info/instruction. You also add some of it to oil crank and a bottle to gas tank.

i used seafoam in my old honda crx. it worked like they said it would. when i had some head work done on it a short while after the treatment i looked at the piston tops and they were clean. only the place ive been able to find seafoam is at NAPA.
