How Do I Remove My Stock Shifter Knob??!

I tried twisting it off, i tried pulling it off... nothing! Im trying to put a short shifter in there and i need to get the leather boot off so i can put it on my new shifter. If anyone had trouble removing one, or know an easy way or the trick to it please let me know. Thank you. Nick

by the way my car is a 95 240 i dont know if the shifter knobs are different on older 240s ... i was actually taking apart my console and thought maybe i can work my way around not getting the knob off, but there i no other way but to get it off and i dont know, if i have to use more force on it or is ther ea trick to it... thanks for replies. It twists off. I believe Nissan uses some kind of threadlock. I had to use a towel and channel-locks to get mine off.

Thread lock? and whats channel-locks? I TRIED TO SWIST IT , AND CANT GET IT OFF FOR THE LIFE OF ME HAHAHA!

Thread lock-put it on bolt threads and then put the bolt into whatever it goes to and the thread lock hardens to keep the bolt from coming out. Commonly used on driveline parts and high stress or vibration areas.

Channel-locks-The pliers that have an adjustable range for large or small tasks. Robogrips are an example.

If all else fails, use a pipe wrench.

I changed my shif boot and it twists off counter-clockwise. It will seem like it's just turning but, believe me it twists right off.

hold the top part with one hand and the other hand grab the shifter. Now with both hands twist counter-clockwise. If you need more grip try wrapping a tight rubberband, or just get one of those "sure-grip" devices and twist it off.

i put a towle over mine and used a vice

it was going slowly but surely, but my retarded filipino dad thought he could do it and ended up taking the towel off and ripping my stock knob to shreds.

...i wanted to keep that knob too...

OK THIS KNOB HAS TO GET OFF HAHAH, IM GONNA BUST OUT SOME TOOLS AND TAKE FURTHER ACTION. I hope i dont rip the shifter out with the handle, i kinda want just the knob to come off! ITS GO TIME!! ill post again with progress shortly.... wish me luck!

YESSS!!! MISSION ACOMPLISHED! this was like a day and half job , This thing was on there tight! Its almost easier to swap the tranny!! I took this clotch and wrapped it around the knob a few times so i wont tear it up, then i took this adjustable pliers #3 http://i.timeinc.net/toh/images/tool...9_pliers03.jpg and i went at it... it was pretty tuff because i also had to put alot of force on the pliers thats why i suggest these (i couldnt find them in garage, they are somewhere!!) http://www.mae.wmich.edu/Faculty/Nag...mages/grip.jpg those grip and dont let go, and all you have to do is turn. I dont know why nissan got those things on there so tight... affraid the knob will fall off while drifting and shifting gears?... well thanks for replies boys and girls, i must go and put in my short shifter ... later
