Started my Explorer 2002 - V8/XLT - 37000 miles, this morning and drove 2 miles. Stopped for an errand and it would not start. Only a chattering sound (relay?). Got a jump start - started all right. Drove 15 miles on highway.
All seemed well. Except when I opened the hood I saw that the oil cap was missing (tech servicing it likely forgot to put it back. Replaced it (it was lying near on top of the radiator). Tried to start it again - again needed at jump at noon. Finally at 7pm it refused to start and would not even start with a jump - just the same loud chattering sound. |

Your oil cap not on has nothing to do with your explorer not starting. Although, I would definitely make the service station/dealership that performed service aware of what you found............and then NEVER go back there!
It sounds to me like your starter is bad. If the vehicle didn't start with a jump (just a chattering noise according to you) I would start looking in the direction of the starter. Mike |

Re: 2002 Explorer Starting Trouble
Mike - Thanks for the reply.
I did get it to start with a jump from another truck - probably the car I used to jump yesterday did not have enough cranking amps in its battery. I then drove it an hour on the freeway - hoping it will charge up the battery - if that is the problem. But no luck - I came back and tried starting and still get the relay chatter. I am beginning to suspect the alternator/charging circuit. |

Or you battery is dead! Yout battery can enough amps to runs your lights and radio, etc....but not have enough amps to start your car. It is possible that you have a bad cell in your battery. Do you have a multimeter to check your charging system?

Re: 2002 Explorer Starting Trouble
I have a multimeter - but still havent checked the charging system or battery. The battery voltage I am sure is going to be OK under no load.
I am not sure how to check the charging system though? Any help will be appreciated. |

Re: 2002 Explorer Starting Trouble
Turns out - I had a bad battery. Funny how everything happens at 36040 miles :-)

For future reference checking the charging system is pretty simple. Start the vehicle. Place the meter leads on the battery terminals (red = POSITIVE and black = NEGATIVE) set the multimeter up to read DC voltage on a 50 volt scale (if you have a digital multimeter you will get a much more accurtate reading....but a digital multimeter is not required). Have someone get in the vehicle and turn on as many accessories as possible i.e. lights, windshield wipers, A/C, run the power windows up and down (only if you have power windows
) and you should read approximately 14 volts DC on the multimeter while all of this is going on. If your multimeter reading drops below 12 volts, and continues to drop lower each tiome you turn on another accessory, you most likely have a charging problem. Hope this helps out someone. If you have any other questions fire away!MIke |

I had a problem where the Explorer would "turn over" but not start. The dealer told me that some of the belts on the Explorer were on a recall list and they replaced the parts at no charge. Hope this helps.

I have never heard of a vehicle not starting because of bad belts!
