Question Door Moulding Dilemma.

I've replaced several sections of moulding on my 86.5 Supra due to rusting. The car isn't rusting, the moulding rusts! Apparently, water can get trapped behind the moulding and rust it out. The adhesive is only 1/4" strip on the top & bottom of the moulding.

Am I the only one with this problem, or has this happened to anyone else?

Also, I've noticed that some owners paint the moulding to match the color of their cars. If anyone out there has done this, does it chip when bumped by a car door? Did you paint them on the car?... off the car and then install?

Thanks.

Re: Door Moulding Dilemma.

86.5-88 mouldings are metal backed, so just as you describe they rust out if you don't keep them cleaned out behind there and you live in a salty area. The dead give away is when the rubber starts to bubble out because the rust on the backside. 89+ mouldings on the other hand are all plastic with a small rubber strip, the mouldings you see painted are 89+. If you swap to 89+ mouldings your going to have to have 89+ tail lights too unless you like the mismatched mouldings on the back.

Well, since I like to try & keep my car stock, swapping the 89+ mouldings & tailights are out. I guess I will have to spray-coat Rustoleum on the inside of the mouldings the next time I have to change them.

Thanks.

Re: Door Moulding Dilemma.

Rustoleum does not actually stop rust anymore than any other paints, and if there is rust it has to be cut or grinded out completely or it will spread again.
