3rd Gen vs 4th Gen

Alright I'm somewhat new to 4th gen Camaros, and I'm starting to get on the scene of buying a first car, anyone who would point out some differences between the 2 generations would be appreciated (I'd like to know performance stuff on a 1986 350 z28 compared to a 1995 v6 3.8l)

Re: 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen

well i dont know alot about 4th gens.. but i can help you on the 3rd gens... first off i dont think the 86s came with a 350 dont quote me on that.. i thought they started in 87.... and overall you would be alot better off buying the 3rd gen cause the v6 4th gens are getting hard to sell at a good price.... the z will hold value better in the long run... and if its got a 350 it should be pretty fast... overall i think you would like the 3rd gen alot better

Re: 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen

i heard a couple of bolt on mods to a 4th gen v6 will get you close to a 3rd gen with a 305.. but thats just what i heard.. the 350 pry packed more of a punch.. but nowhere near that of the lt1 or ls1.. and yes the 3rd gens look better, even though i have a 4th.. lol

Re: 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen

A 92 5.7L TPI came with 245hp and 345 tq.

A 95 V6 came with 200hp and 220tq.

Pretty much all powertrain parts can be swapped over from the 4th gens to the 3rd gens. Alot of the interior fits no problem too, it basically comes down to overall looks.

Re: 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen

Yeah, I was into third gens for a while, and I was planning on buying one, but I found my car first, don't know if that's good or bad right now, but that's beside the point. Anyway the 86 didn't come with a 350, unless it's like one of eight that were prototypes. You'll get a lot more respect from just about everyone who's not really into cars for having the 4th gen too.

Re: 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen

Since when is buying a car about respect?? Thats for people with more money than brains. You will not find an 86 thirdgen with a 350 unless it has been swapped. Gm never sold the 350 to the public until 1987.

Re: 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen

never did like the first gens altho i guess if i had to put them in order it would be like 3rd>2nd(70-73only)>1st gen>4thgen

i want to get another 3rd gen but the emissions out here in LA suck so much im forced to get a second gen or atleast thats my excuse
and buying a car should be about a car that you love not the respect its gunna give you

you'll get respect from us no matter what camaro you get, and we're the only ones that really matter.

wow thanks for all the useful, quick responses guys, i guess i was mistaken on the 86 350, the one I was looking at must've been later. I was pretty set on getting a 3rd generation Camaro, I'm by no means rich, saving every penny I make to get a car. New Camaros are just more money, but I wouldn't like to get an older one and have it bust on me the first 50 kilometres. I am not comparing 2 cars, I can't afford them yet, just trying to get a good grip on what im buying. As I understand it, parts are easy and decently cheap to replace on 80s f-bodies? Is this correct?

Re: 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen

Yeah, 97CamaroRS, you're car isn't the least desirable camaro, mine it, it has the 3.4, so it has less horsepower.

Re: 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen

screw that, id take my 3.4 fourth gen over a 2.8 third gen any day of the damn year.

also, this topic is more about personal taste. both generations are the same in terms of reliability and workability. the 4th gens have pros that the 3rds dont, and vice versa. go with which ever car YOU like more, not what everyone tells you to go with. the one point of advice i will give you is: if you want easy cheap speed, dont get a sixer, if you want something that is easy on insurance but you will have to work on to get it fast, then get a sixer (not a 2.8 though, those are to power like satan is to jesus)...
