Insurence Rates???

Hey, I'm looking into getting a 94'-96' base or SL 3000GT. I'm probly not going to add any goodies under the hood cept maybe a cold air intake. My question is how much would insurence be for a 17 yr old on this car? My parents have safeco and driving records are so so. I'd be under their insurence for this one... anyone here know prices? thanks!

Re: Insurence Rates???

It all depends on where you live, how long you've been driving, your record, etc etc. I'm under SafeCo as well and I pay about $700+ every 6 months--and that's will a buttload of discounts. But for you, I'd probably say it'll be about $1000 or so because you're younger. You could always call for a quote. It's free since your parents are with them already.

Hmm what kind of discounts do you think I'd be eligable for? Do you know any off hand, like is there a good driver discount?

ya, i called up the good ole insurance people one day. The amount we pay for the 3000GTs or for any car is based on the 'rating' or so they call it. I was looking into selling my 93 3000GT base (manual, 60k miles) and getting a 94 Camaro Z28 (5.7L V8 with headers, 75 shot of NOS, and a bunch of mods) and it would be cheaper to insure the Camaro than the 3000GT. I was like wha???

The insurance lady told me the 'rating' is based on factors like: foreign or domestic, availability of parts, pricing of parts, crash-worthyness, etc. etc. So i think always the foreign cars will be more expensive to insure than the domestics b/c the parts cost more and they're not as easy to find as the domestic parts.

ALSO, any mitsu owner knows how hard it is to work on our freakin engines! There is next to ZERO space in the engine compartment, with the DOHC setup the timing belt is a pain. Compare that to a SOHC Camaro with just a serpentine belt in the front with plenty of room to work.

But i could never part with my 3000GT. They look sooo sweet.

Agreed! Although I have to sell mine now because I want a VR4 and I don't "need" it during school since I no longer have a long distance girlfriend.

Re: Insurence Rates???

Welcome to AF, being that you are new, you probably don't know, but there is a search function available on this forum. You should do a search, as this ? has been addressed hundreds of times in this forum alone. There are plenty of discounts and other good advice in the other threads regarding this issue, but nobody other than your insurance provider will be able to offer you an accurate quote.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Yeah, there's good student discount, multi-car discount (depending on how many cars are insured), anti-theft (just get an alarm but if you get an SL, you should have a factory one already), and distant student. Those are the only ones I could remember off the top of my head.

And osok_deadeye_21, yeah, what you're paying is expensive but I think it's also because you're with a more well known company. Like we were with Farmers at one time and they f*cking charged the living hell out of us. I was driving an '86 Supra and paying I think $1200+ every six months for liability only--with a CLEAN record too. So yeah, try someone else...I think at least....

yeah it is bs since they said it was going to be 900 every 6 months but then i get a letter in the mail saying that they messed up on my policy and i owe them 100 bucks. its like is that my fualt??? Anyways as soon as my policy ends i am going somewhere else plus i am getting a 1st gen 3kgt and it will be cheaper.

Na man, it doesn't sounds like BS. When i was 16, i had a 96 Camry and the insurance was 800 every 6 months. I do live in Texas, but i'm pretty sure the rates are always high like that for 16 yr old males. Males don't get a significant price break until we're 25...sux don't it? Girls get a price break around 21. Weird huh?

But no matter what insurance agency you're with, the rates will be pretty high for a high performance sports car like a 3000GT. But do shop around and get quotes. Good luck

Re: Insurence Rates???

You would probably have to put power to the rear wheels

it IS possible to put an AWD tranny onto a base model GT, but NOT recommendable. As StealthModifier said, you would have to put power to the rear wheels, meaning a rear drive shaft and rear end from a VR4. Plus, since you're transferring power to the rear wheels, your overall hp will drop dramatically since you lose torque over distance. That's why they turbocharge the VR4.

But if you didn't add power to the rear wheels, you might just end up with some open ended parts from the AWD tranny extending to the rear.

Heck, check it out.

BUT take a look at the gear ratios for the 5spd and the 6spd trannys.

So the 6spd AWD tranny offers a 3.266:1 ratio compared to the 3.090:1 ratio of the 5spd FWD tranny. So ideally you should get off the line a bit faster.

Its a good idea to do the tranny swap, but ask around to see what others think. If it worked, not only would you get off the line a bit quicker, but that 6th gear would give you a little better gas mileage. Of course some might say all that trouble to swap trannys is not worth it... and you're better off just getting a VR4...

Hmm, well I was going to also put in an eaton supercharger maybe and a new exhaust system, if the one I buy it from doesn't have an already great one in it that is... I mean the GT's gonna be somewhat of a commuter car, I may race it sometimes, but only with my bud's for small cash or somthin. hmm, what else do you guys think? I really appreciate the help!
