90 shadow wont start

hi. i have a 1990 dodge shadow 2.2 that turns over but wont start. i can put gas into the throttle body and i will fire and run until the fuel gets used up. i replaced the fuel filter but still had no luck. i then checked the voltage for the fuel pump and found that there was no power at the pump or at the fuse panel. (i checked for voltage with the key in the ON position). i then replaced the ASD relay but still didn't get any juice. i'm stumped. please help!

thanks.

Re: 90 shadow wont start

Fuel pump, fuel pump relay, corroded wiring under the fuse panel. broken wiring.

last but not least, the distibutor pick-up (hall effect) can also kill the fuel, but it's the injectors that don't fire, not the fuel pump.

The pump comes on when the ignition is first turned on for a second. the relay should kick in and charge the fuel rail (in your case, the fuel inlet to the throttle body). Check your fuel pressure first, just in case it's the injectors and not the fuel.

other possible causes:
throttle position sensor, ECM,

check your vehicle for codes before just replacing parts: http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html

Hope this helped you!

Re: 90 shadow wont start

thanks slantsixness.

i managed to get juice to the fuel pump and fuse panel but only when i crank it over. my understanding is that the pump should run for a second or two when the key is even just turned to the ON position. maybe i'm mistaken. (computer problem?)

so after i got juice to the pump i gave the tank a few good hits with my rubber mallet near the pump. the car then started and ran for a couple of minutes then died. i repeated that a few more times before it gave up the ghost. so i now suspect the pump itself. any insight would greatly be appreciated.

thanks, crizpy

Re: 90 shadow wont start

bad wires and a new fuel pump. it's now fixed though the new pump seems loud.
