99 Civic HX CVT Transmission Issues
Looking for some input on what to do with my sisters Civic HX. The car has 80K miles on it and the trans has already been rebuilt once at 36K. The car is now inoperable due to the CVT trans. She has been dilligent with servicing it, but its seems this transmission has been trouble since day one. The Honda dealer advised her it may cost $4K if it needs a total rebuild. There has been a bulletin on this transmission, but they advised her if she was approved for a "goodwill" repair, it only covered parts-not labor. Its seems to me Honda should cover this completely-especially since the buletin advises the car may surge at 50-60mph- a definite safety concern in my book. Any input on what to do?
Thanks, Kevin |

My daughter had her HX CVT replaced by dealer 3x in 30,000 mi and we don't know if it is fixed this time. Let's keep in touch in case one of us finds a solution.

Re: 99 Civic HX CVT Transmission Issues
wow thats alot for these tranny's. I know the main cause of failure is usually wrong fluids.

not likely the fluid, because every time it acted up, the dealer changed the fluid first and said to come back if that didn't solve the problem. The problem always came back soon after

Re: 99 Civic HX CVT Transmission Issues
Getting a tranny rebuilt to factory specs is a complete rip off. Pick up another tranny at a junkyard or source an already rebuilt one and swap them.
I had tranny issues in my old civic too, reverse went out. Had 3 shops quote me over $2000 to rebuild it or $600 to replace it. I said screw it to both options and went to the local importer and picked up a JDM d15b tranny. Spent 3 hours in the garage with my dad and one of his friends and was on the road later that day with a tranny that shifted like it was brand new.

Re: 99 Civic HX CVT Transmission Issues
couldn't you just swap it out for any other d series tranny though. Just the internals and how a CVT tranny works is different than the other autos isn't it? Unless the bell housing and everything is different too.
