I think its broken...
I think i blew my engine but it still turns and people tell me its not blown its got something else wrong. When i broke it it was knocking really loud and lost all the coolent and oil then it locked up but now it turns. Does anybody know whats wrong and what should i do. Should rebuild the engine or swap it out for something better and what swap would be best. Im pretty sure its broken. Its a 98 GST.

Well i was going out of town to trade it in so put oil and coolent. Half ways there it started smoking and over heated so i pulled over. Then i started heading back and it was knocking very loud then it just locked up wouldnt turn or do anything and was very hot. After i got it towed back a friend put oil in it and it was turning but it wont start.

More specifics...this vague stuff won't fly.
Why did you put oil in? Why did you put coolant in? How badly did it overheat? Did you drive after it overheated? Describe the knocking sound. More than likely, you trashed the head.

I put oil cuz it was low and coolent cuz it was low the radiator cap was on. It was smoking and the cams were glowing red thats how hot it was. I stopped to let it cool down and then drove it again. I started knocking like someone was slamming the engine with a hammer under my hood. Then it locked up the pistons and cams would not turn at all i would try to start it and it would just grind. I got it home put oil and coolent and it started tuning but still wouldnt start. I dont know why there was no oil and i dont know why there was no coolent.

your cams were "glowing"?!? do you not watch your temp gauge? and the knocking you heard was most likely either your pistons hitting the cylinder walls or your connecting rod bearings are gone and the connecting rods were slapping against the crankshaft... take off the oil pan and see if you can move the connecting rods or not... if not and they are tight, then its your piston rings! and my guess with the head is it's fucked... "glowing" cams are not a good thing! i cant gaurantee its bad without seeing it first but its my best guess~ good luck man, let us know what you find when you take off the oil pan!

Yes, but above the valves...
At that temp I can honestly say the block could even be warpped. Out of all the 4g63s I've delt with I have yet to see a block warp. But I have also never seen red cams. That is just insanity. I find it hard to belive your timing belt is still intacts after such a heat range. I wouldn't even attempt to rebuild a motor that went through that. lol |
