Hate to start out like this, but I have a problem with my '91
Hi there
I'm really confused with a problem with my '91 Supreme with a 3.1. On Saturday, after having the brakes bleed, the Olds got about 3 blocks from the shop and died. No start. The motor cranked but no fire. Got it towed back to the shop and they've been working on it for a day and a half with no luck. Here's where it gets interesting. The code-reader shows no faults. The crank sensor has been replaced (no charge), there's spark, there's pressure on the fuel rail, and it will fire if there's starter fluid sprayed into the intake. The computer was reset (30 mins with no battery power), and I'm really confused. Any ideas out there in Cutlass land as to what's FUBAR? Initally I though it was the alternator, but there's spark. The car was running well before that - pulling strong and getting some pretty good mileage to boot before this. ARRRRRGGGGHHHH! |

Sounds like a weak spark condition. First, did they show you the old crank sensor? Second thing to replace is the Ignition Control module on the front side of the motor. All the coil packs plug into it. The module gets hot over time and ends up burning up internally, thereby giving weak spark or no spark. If you had it running, but with a miss I would consider it just to be a coil. If the crank sensor has already been replaced, that eliminates known problem number 1, the module is number 2. Hope you get it started and not ripped off. -Chris

I bet it is your fuel pressure regulator.

An update:
Spark was strong, 41 psi in the rail, but one injector had gone bad and shorted, so the computer wasn't firing the other injectors. Got that replaced, and the ol' beast is running well again - only 300k KM on her. ![]() As a side note, the first place I took it to could not figure out the problem. They tried for about a day and a half and had replaced the crank sensor - no cost to me. Kinda rare to find a bit of honesty at a mechanic's shop - and nice too. |

Re: Hate to start out like this, but I have a problem with my '91
ZedHead.. I had the same problem as you except when they replaced the shorted out injector, i took her out for a spin and she was doing great. And later that evening, she would stall like crazy. Even if i turn the Air on to keep the revs up.. clunk.. Chug.
Then I figured i would mess with the throttle-body so the it revs higher than usual by ajusting the stop screw on the side of it, and hey it worked. Now she wont stall, but when shes in drive and i let off the brake, she rolls off the line slowly and im afraid to give her gas cuz it sounds like im flooding the engine and might stall out. Does anyone have any advice for me? |
