Hey, Im new here.

Hey guys and gals. I need your help with buying a car. A Camaro. Ive been into Camaros for about a year now, and have wanted one for about a year. Well, I want to buy a 94 z28 from a private seller. Well the car is up for $3500. Is this reasonable, and should I be wary? I mean its a v8 auto with power everything as you should already know. Though it does have 136,000 miles on it. Oh yeah, and should I buy a Camaro with that many miles on it? I am not sure if he has raced it. But who hasnt raced a Camaro, unless its a show car only, and this is no show car. Thanks in advance and Ill see you around the boards.

Re: Hey, Im new here.

check for aftermarket parts on the car... the more it has the more it was raged on... price sounds fair... just remember that just cause a car does not have any aftermarket parts on it, it does not mean it did not at some point... these cars are worth more stock than moded out...

Re: Hey, Im new here.

I agree that 136k is a lot, I havent seen the seller, But I called him up, he sounded like he was in his upper 20 maybe early 30. Oh yeah, and what is the insurance like on a 94 z? anybody know? Im only 16. So it will probably be what, at least $1500 every 6 months? And thanks for the welcome.

Re: Hey, Im new here.

Ive got over 160k miles on my 89 and it runs good and strong and neither the engine or tranny have ever been touched. All it has is a small oil leak but 3500 probaly isnt a bad price for the 94. Try and talk him down to 3000 maybe and have it inspected somewhere before you buy it.

Re: Hey, Im new here.

Damn straight Im going to talk his ass down to 3000. Right after I check the car out for aftermarket parts, and signs that it has been raced. Isnt he supposed to tell me if there is anything wrong with it because of the lemon law anyways? Thats how it is in MA anyways. Insurance scares me. I may have nightmares after I get my first bill. haha

Re: Hey, Im new here.

Welcome
Damnit, I really shoulda seen how far I could get with $3000 lol. I bought mine with 148,000 on it (wanted 5k that wasnt happening lol) and now its over 154,000 and running smooth... rear main seal's been leaky since i bought it but it hasn't really been a problem. Granted the lt1 and that 4l60e may be different than the 3800 and its 4l60e, but I'd prolyl say good deal. Make sure you get a mechanic (preferably one that you know or your family knows, the more of a relationship you have with them the better) check everything out.

Re: Hey, Im new here.

Me or my family arent REAL close to any mechanics. I know a few kids in Auto shop at school that may want to check it, but what do they know? lmao. Anyways, my dad's mechanic may want to do it. Ill see how much he wants for it. I heard $150 for mechanics to do that.

Re: Hey, Im new here.

Well here in ontario when you buy a used car you cant drive it on the road till it passes a safety inspection. The inspection costs 60 bucks and they spend close to an hour and go over every inch of the car to make sure its safe.

I just pay this guy I know 100 bucks to write me out a slip though.

However you shouldnt have to pay more than 1 hours wages to get someone to take a look at the car. I wouldnt bother getting high school kids to look at it, alot of them dont know what to look for anyways.

Re: Hey, Im new here.

safety inspections won't tell you if there is anything mechanically wrong with the car. they only tell you if it is safe to drive it on the road. lemon laws only apply to dealers. when you buy from a person it is assumed that you are buying "as is." having a mechanic overlook the car shouldn't cost that much. inspect body lines for misalignment (signs of previous wreck), different color paint or repaint (sign of previous wreck), oil/coolant for proper color and no mixing, tire wear (out-of-alignment/wreck), transmission health, odd noises while driving/steering, test drive. have him check all these and you should be fine.
Welcome.

Re: Hey, Im new here.

dont forget to check the spare tire, see if its ever been used. although im sure it has, but see how worn it is. a lot of wear means the guy used it a lot and didnt drive the car as carefully as he could have...
