abs and trac off light coming on
just a question...have a 1999 pontiac grand am v6 3.4...recently my abs light and the trac off light have come on. Also occasionally my low trac light also comes on. Took into the shop and they said rt front speed sensor is malfunctioning and would cost $400.00 us to fix. Anyone had this problem before and any suggestions would be appreciated. thnks

Had the same problem with my 99. Took it to a mechanic and had it hooked up. Thank god it was a friend and he didn't charge me. Computer responded with an error code for the left front speed sensor. Replaced and all was fine. If you are mechanically able, try to get the part from a parts store (Alot cheaper than the dealers) and install it yourself. It's the entire wheel hub assembly and not just the sensor that needs to be replaced. Pain in the butt, but you'll be happy when it's done.

Re: abs and trac off light coming on
i have a '97 had the same problem on the front left wheel. I paid about $300 to have it replaced and a week later the lights came back on and the same problem occured with the breaks ( breaks not locking at slow speeds scaring the crap out of me lol ). So i've gotta take it back in, but if it's the sensor again I"m just going to unplug the abs fuse period. I'll lose the ABS, ETS and low trac sensor but at least I'll be able to break like normal people.
hope this helps out. btw. the part only costs about $80 CAD. the labour is the big part of it. Try asking your mechanic to switch your wheels around becuase if one of your rims is dented ( as was mine ) it could also mess with the sensor. |

Re: abs and trac off light coming on
If you can do brakes, you can change a hub bearing on your Grand Am. The abs sensor is part of the hub bearing, and is what is causing your lights to come on.
