heh, any day.

It will look 100 times better when you get those ports cleaned up.

Yeah I know it looks rough now, but thats the only way I know of to cut ports without and endmill or a plasma. I'm thinking work will resume on the intake in a couple days, so it should start to look better.

Re: New to the forum, check out my current fabrication project

Yeah its made of 1/4", but the rest is going to be made out of mandrel tubing(around 1 3/4") and sheet metal, ~20ga. I'm hoping it'll weigh around what a stock cast iron manifold weighs when its all done. Its gotta house an air-water intercooler too, with as long of runners as I can fit. should be interesting to see what it comes out like. If I fail, and I probably will, its no big deal. I can just throw another intake on it and run blow-thru carb with no intercooler, then later buy an air/water unit and convert a manifold to FI. But I want to try, practice makes perfect.

Yeah, if this guy doesnt come buy my 77 amc gremlin project soon I'm fixing to pull the motor and build it full race spec.... 258 I6 with fuel injection/complete stand alone iggnition system/ProCharger Centrifugal supercharger.... nobody will be expecting a strait six to be packing around 600hp in a car that weighs less than 2000 pounds.

Re: New to the forum, check out my current fabrication project

Awesome! That'd be a nice sleeper. Before I got my mustang, I was looking at an AMC Spirit with a 400hp chevy in it, that was quite a sleeper. Half the fun of building cars is doing something is different.. Hence my project. Unique and functional.

I've recently decided to get an aftermarket block instead of trying to make a stock block survive ~650hp. Goin for the 'do it right the first time' approach. Aftermarket block, forged crank/rods/pistons, rebuild the turbos, etc. Then I have to get a new transmission, my current (and brand new) c4 3spd auto was only built to take 550hp. The new motor with the new block should be capable of around 900hp on race gas. I think I'll survive with a measly 450-500rwhp until I can afford the swap. I have to decide what I want.. from a bit of research, looks like it'll cost around $1000 for a 4spd Toploader capable of 900hp, $2500 for a T-5 5 speed, and $3000 for a T-56 6 speed(prices based on price of a core plus parts capable of 900hp, all assembly work done by myself). Toploader is nice because its cheap and tough, thats probably what I'll go with. Although rowing through 6 gears is more fun...

Re: New to the forum, check out my current fabrication project

Mostly street with a few trips to the strip a year. Don't worry, I'm not going to be running full boost(or anywhere near it - full should be around 16-20psi) on the street, I'll probably run 6psi day to day, which should give me 430-460hp at the wheels. I'll probably turn it up to 10psi occasionally, which should be around 520-550hp to the wheels. If I can get the thing to hook up, it should be enough to stay ahead of just about anything on the street.

Re: New to the forum, check out my current fabrication project

Update!
I wish I had my digital camera, cuz there would be new stuff on my site... But I can tell you what I'm now planning on doing(changed my mind on a lot of stuff...)
I'm now sticking with a stock block for now... I figure by the time I've generated enough cash for a beefy T-56 I'll be able to wait for an aftermarket block as well, so I'm keeping it mild at 550hp with the C4 trans.
No longer is there going to be an intercooler in the intake manifold, no need for it. I figure its too much of a pain in the ass to do for being used only at the track, which is a tiny percentage of the car's life. 6 or 8psi shouldn't require any intercooler. When/if I get my new block and trans, I'll buy a nice intercooler. Right now I'll run water injection for my occasional higher boost(~12psi) street and track endeavors. I figure, I've never even ridden in a car with more than around 340rwhp(my friend's supercharged '01 mustang gt), and that was damn fast, plenty fast for the majority of street driving, so why waste thousands on stuff that'll just be mega overkill.
My short block is comin together. I've got my crank, rods, and pistons. Crank is a stock crank turned .010/.010. Rods are Childs and Albert aluminum racing rods, which run around $1200 for a set. I got mine, brand new, off ebay for $355!!! I was excited about that. It even came with 1 extra, so I'll have something cool to hand on my wall!
Pistons are a custom set of JE Blower flat top pistons. Also got off ebay, for another $350. Usually a set of custom pistons from JE is around $800. Besides the crank, both pistons and rods should be good for 1000+hp easy. Stock cleveland cranks will take much more power than the main webbing in a stock block will, probably around 750hp. Not really sure, never heard of anyone breaking a stock cleveland crank without first losing the block or a rod or something else first. I wouldn't doubt with an aftermarket block this rotating assembly will be capable of handling high teens/low 20s boost at 6500-7000rpm, which is well over 1000hp. More than that car will ever be able to plant without twisting the frame into a pretzel.
The intake manifold is finally taking shape. I got a good ammount of time to work on it over Thanksgiving break. It now has runners! And man does it look sweet. I still haven't cleaned up the ports, I was too anxious to make it look like something. Cleanin up the ports will be the last thing I do, I'm sure. It has ~1 3/4" ID(1 7/8ths OD)mandrel pipe that I amputated from an old set of BBC 'build your own header' kit that I got at my local speed shop for 40 bucks. Runners are roughly 9 inches long each. Hard to describe what its going to look like without pictures.. next weekend I'll have photos. Since the runners came so close to the bolt bosses, I welded as much as I could possibly reach, then covered the intersection between the flange and runner with POR Epoxy, kinda like moroso A/B epoxy. Its like clay or play-doh when soft. This should keep it sealed, the welds will keep them from breakin off. It took me all day today to figure out how to make a good injector bung. I finally decided to tear apart a fuel rail from a stock 302 EFI manifold. The little 'hats' that sit on the top of the injector are also the correct size for the nozzle end of the injector, and with a little work they are perfect and are free. Saved myself another $90 for injector bungs.
Just needed to rant about my progress, I'm a bit wired right now and want to get back to work... gotta survive a week of school first.
Later

What fuel rail are you going to use?

Re: New to the forum, check out my current fabrication project

Since the injector spacing isn't the same as any other engine, I can't use a stock/engine-specific rail. I'm most likely going to cut the 'hats' off of another 302 rail and weld NPT/flare/AN fittings on top of them and run individual fuel lines to my fuel pressure regulator. I think individual lines look better anyways.

I can't claim all the credit for this car's build, my brother has helped me a lot, both in fabrication and basic assembly stuff.
I'll ask my brother for the address to his website, he does a whole lot of fabrication for his vehicle too. He's a year and half older than me, he's 21. He is into the offroading scene, I take care of the speed part.
Both of us a Ford guys, he runs a 1979 bronco. Currently his is in pieces as well. He's doing a frame off restoration. He's in the process of doing a rear coil conversion. He recently pretty much built a set of radius arms. Took a stock set, added around 18" on to them and made them about twice as big around. Probably tripled the weight of them. His radius arm build will be featured in an article in Bronco Driver magazine. He's also made differential skid plates for both the Dana 44 front and 9" rear.
My parents are getting a bit annoyed about having three cars in pieces laying around our property, gotta get these things running!(he actually has 2 broncos, a '78 and a '79. The '78 is together, but the 351M engine in it is so woefully underpowered it can barely move the thing... The '79 is just a frame right now, the body of the '78 will be going on the '79 frame when its done. Engine will be a Ford 460).
When we're done with our cars, we're hoping to start a little company making parts like the differential skid plates and extended radius arms.
