1993 Concorde 3.3 L - Weird Dying Fit

This is my mom's car. About once a month or once every two months, the Concorde will have trouble staying running unless you push down on the gas. If I'm driving at around 25 MPH and I let go of the gas to decend a slight hill, it'll die. But it'll only do this when it's having one of it's bad days. My mom had trouble keeping it running the other day. It'll also puff out black smoke too. I was looking out my bedroom window when mom was trying to pull out. She started it and revved it up to the rev limiter and a whole shitload of black smoke poured out.

Spark plugs and wires have been changed. So has the PCV Valve and the hose. I even dumped in a bottle of "Sea Foam Injector Cleaner". All this gave it a bit more power. But we are still faced with this dying fit. But I am confident that this problem will not disable the car from being driven. So we can still get in it and drive it knowing that it'll get from point A to point B without leaving us stranded. I've also driven it in low gear with high revs and driven it HARD to burn the shit out. It has over 123,000 miles on it so far.

Any ideas?

Sounds like you could try changing the fuel filter might be clogged up.

That's what we thought too. So, we had it changed and it still has it's fit. I also noticed, sometimes, when I really hammer the throttle, black smoke pours out the exhaust. Now I can't complain about this. Why? Got a white car tailgating you? Romp on the gas and watch them back off and go "Whoa? That Concorde is a diesel?"

Disconnect Battery for a few minutes and see if this resets anything like the idle control. If this doesn't do anything remove idle air control and clean, make sure o ring is good shape. also check on back side of motor with a piece of fuel line listening for vaccum leaks and around throttle body. If you hadn't cleaned your throttle body make sure you get the gasket first and a can of throttle body cleaner. I've seen the throttle body gasket with a chunk of gasket missing this causes a high idle though. Your problem sounds more like your idle control is sticking or disconnected. Hope this might help someone.

Sounds to me like your MAP Sensor may be bad (Front of the intake Manifold) or one or both of your O2 Sensors are toast. Any of them items will give you a full rich condition. I wouldn't drive it around much with it running that rich, catalytic (sp)converter damage can result from too much raw fuel going through it and would cause them to overheat.

That or your throttle position sensor is out of wack. If you have a concorde prior to '98, what you can do is turn your ignition key on/off for about three times and read the codes that come up. If you get a code 24, you have a bad TPS, and replace that ASAP. Happened to me on my old '92 Dodge Spirit 3.0 V6.

It happened again last night. Mom and my uncle was just about to enter the driveway when it stalled and wouldn't restart. So she called me and ran up there to help push the car back. I told mom to try starting it again and it restarted. I then relooked at this thread and noticed what theFREAKnasty82 said about reading the codes. Well, I did that and it flashed me 12, 11, and 55. I went to http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html and looked up the codes. 12 is because the battery was recently disconnected. Probably when the battery was replaced. 55 is just an "End of Codes" indication. 11 is crank or camshaft sensor. So, that's GOT to be it. I told my Dad what I did and suggested he have both those sensors replaced.

Replacing these sensors myself shouldn't be too hard. I just need to know the exact location. It's the 3.3 pushrod engine.

Mom drove the car into town today without a problem. The problem is probably not going to come back for another while.
