GOOD PRICE???? or Ripped off??

Hi everyone,

I have a 93 toyota camry xle. Last December i had a head gasket blow on it! yeah almost the worst thing that could possibly happen. Since then, i've had a new engine installed, a new water pump, a new radiator, and a number of other things.

The car has been running pretty well since then. However today my car's temperature gage was rising, it got 3/4 of the way up, so i pulled over immediately. I took it in for a diagnostic and discovered it was the water pump that had gone bad. I don't know exactly how yet, but i will soon.

So now they are telling me its going to cost $630 for parts and labor to:

Replace the water pump
Replace the thermostat
Replace the timing belt
Replace two drive belts: for the power steering and AC Alternator.

They said its a pretty huge job that will be ready by tomorrow.
I needed my car no later than Monday so i really had no choice to but give them the okay to fix it. Did i get a good price? or did i get ripped off? Any imput would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: GOOD PRICE???? or Ripped off??

I'd say you got an ok price. They were going to charge me around 400 just to replace the timing belt on my car. I ended up doing it myself and replacing all of the drive belts and some gaskets. It took a while but I saved a whole bunch of money. The biggest part that they are charing for is the labor. I dont know how much a water pump costs but the other things are all cheap.

This is a link to maintenance schedule and labor costs.

http://www.edmunds.com/maintenance/M...g.feature..4.*

If you go to the 60k maintenance listing for your car, the cost of parts and labor for timing belt are shown ($160.00). You have to put in your zip code for most accurate costs.

The rest of the costs (belts, water pump, thermostat) are mainly parts since they have to remove the belts and have access to the water pump. There is some labor (maybe $50) associated with replacing the thermostat.

I don't know how accurate this is, but it has been fairly accurate for the repairs I have been able to price.

I had almost the exact same work done on my '93 last year at 120,000 miles including replacing the oil seals. $550 here in California. This was at an independent shop.
