Shift Cable Problems

1996 Safari
I have been having intermittent problems where my van would try to start on its own, or when turning the key would turn over but not fire and then would not stop turning over when the key is turned off, when putting the gear selector into Reverse the enigne would actually start. I was led to believe the Neutral Safety Switch could be the culprit. I changed ot out only to create a new problem for myself. I now do not have enough range of mobility to move the shifter into any gear except for Reverse and Neutral. I used the alignment tool and am able to start the van only in Neutral. I am confident the van is in Neutral and Reverse as displayed due to the fact the van will actually move in reverse when in that gear. I believe that when I tried to loosen the nut holding the cable to the gear lever at the tranny I forced the cable back up throuigh to the steering column and perhaps have popped out the retainer clip there. I haven't had a chance to get at it yet but is there a correct method of installing that end of the cable and setting it up properly?

Thanks for any help....

Re: Shift Cable Problems

You may be able to find the procedure if you go to autozone.com and enter your vehicle information, then click on repair info, vehicle repair guides and then you should be able to find what you're looking for
