Depends on how much power your amp is putting out. If your using 500 watts rms with 8 gauge wiring... that wouldnt work/sound to well. So, yes it can affect how it sounds, and how your amp performs

Re: Wire Question

500rms with 8ga speaker wire?
jesus talk about overkill

anyway, he is right though, it all depends on how much power you have, but 16ga will be fine for just about any amount of power if it's for your front stage.

Re: Wire Question

Wire is wire... Well, unless it's that angel hair crap they supply with most speakers. 8ga is just rediculous... I see a lot of people do that, probably more for cosmetics and "wow" factor, but it's not benefitting the overall sound. Largest I've used is 12ga, and even that is still probably more than enough for most high-powed sub amps. Hell... Even pro audio cable for concert events is usually 14ga or so, and they're pushing thousands of watts...

Hmm....8 ga is redicolous? I'm using 1 ga with 1,800 watts rms, and i don't think i'd get much power from my amp if i was using 14 ga. Plus, then i'm sure i'm getting the full potential, and i have a much better gnd. It's better to have to large of wire then to small

( of course that's for my subs, but still, same thing goes for speakers. )

we're talking speaker wire, not power wire

Re: Wire Question

speaker wire size doesn't really matter just the power wire size to the amp itself

Re: Wire Question

If I run anything smaller than 12g on my speakers after a few months the wire gets crispy and turns brown. It will also shoot sparks if it touch the speaker wires together
