'92 Talon - Slight Vibration

My Talon has 214,000 miles and has always run like a top until 2
weeks ago. There is a very slight fast vibration that I notice when
I'm idling or if I rev it high between shifts.

I've had plugs/wires replaced and my mechanic does not see anything
wrong. The car still rides great but this vibration is bothering me.
Its definitely not related to the tires.

I thought it might be a partially blocked catalytic converter but
the mechanic said it looked ok.

Any ideas......? Thanks.

Rough enough to rattle your hand when idle at the light...?

I would not say the vibration is rough....but with my hand on the steering wheel it does vibrate......also the driver's side view mirror is vibrating slightly.

Re: '92 Talon - Slight Vibration

A bit more detail on exactly when the vibration is most apparent would be helpful. However, in both instances described you would have the clutch depressed, right? Maybe the throw out bearing?

Re: '92 Talon - Slight Vibration

my guess is on the bearings as well. My Talon had similar problems, replaced bearing and things are better now

Re: Re: Re: '92 Talon - Slight Vibration

Here is the best way I can describe it:

The vibration is worse as the RPM's increase and is mostly felt when my foot is on the gas pedal, clutch, or brake. (Not the sterring wheel when I'm driving).

If I'm in 3rd gear at 2000 RPM's it feels smooth, at 3000 RPM's, I can feel it in the gas pedal. At 4000 RPM's, I feel it stronger in the gas pedal.

If I press in the clutch in at those various RPM's, I do not feel the vibration any longer.

Thanks, Joe

Thanks for the tips. Someone on the yahoo board mentioned Timing belt could be a problem....I have not changed my timing belt for 100,000 miles....

Re: '92 Talon - Slight Vibration

dead cylinder or timing belt id say. but it is a DSM so it could be a washer on your windshield wiper motor thats making it do that

Re: '92 Talon - Slight Vibration

jsumi;
Definitely change the timing belt if you have that many miles on it! Can't say for sure that it's the source of the vibration, but it very well could be.

In case you didn't know, DSM's have zero valve clearance. If that belt breaks or jumps time while you're driving you could be looking at some serious internal engine damage. Don't wait, it isn't worth the risk.
