740 Overdrive Issue
I have seen quite a bit of data here on overdrive problems with the various Volvo automatic transmissions. None really seem to fit the issue I have been having.
When the brick is cold, it shifts fine, and OD and the OD selector work fine. Once thoroughly warmed up, and having downshifted out of OD a dozen times or so, the change in load required to cause a downshift, and the pedal travel associated with this change in load, decrease dramtically. The slightest change causes a downshift out of OD. It then will not shift back into OD unless I let off sharply on the pedal, and the upshift is very abrubpt. After about 20 miles of freeway driving, and the OD shifting getting progressively worse, it will no longer upshift into OD. This condition will remain until the car has thoroughly cooled. With a shorter cool off, the car will shift to OD once or twice before returning to the no OD condition. Any thoughts out there? Thanks Doc |

my dads 90 740 turbo had a similar problem with the OD. our 96 nissan altima too. try checking the overdrive solenoid. it may need to be replaced.

Re: 740 Overdrive Issue
If the orange arrow comes on when overdrive kicks out then it is electrical and probably the OD relay which is located on the fuse panel on the passenger side. To access on a 1989 740, remove ashtray, remove fuse panel cover, remove square plastic trim around cigarette, remove 2 screws which allows removing of lighter and storage area and gives access to relays. The OD relay is white 1"x1"x3" on the right side. It is made by Hella, part number J9010-23997

Do you happen to know where the relay is on a '92 960? |

Re: Re: 740 Overdrive Issue
No, sorry don't know anything but the '89 740 and then only out of necessity. I found out all my info by just digging on the web. There is a lot of info out there, just have to sort through it.
