Angry '87 22r won't start

I have a 1987 Toy 4wd with 22R with carb. It was not running when I got it and it needed a head gasket replaced. I replaced the gasket but can't get it to start. I have done the following: timing is correct by crank marks, plug wires test good, coil test good, cap test good,am getting spark to plugs, fuel is entering the intake manifold( only from one side, outside barrel). Have tried starting fluid and it seems to want to try,but can't even get a cough out of it. This is my first Toy and I think it will be fun once it is running.
I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Double check your *vlalve* timing (timing chain). This is very easy to mis-align. What is your compression on each cylinder?

Thanks Nate, at the suggestion of someone else I checked the valve clearances and they were too tight. I reset them and it started on 3rd try. I appreciate everyone's suggestions on this sight.
