Noise from Transmission
1997 GP SE 3.8L
150,000 km Noise started back 6 months ago......slowly getting worse.Generally described as a whine or growl that seems to be coming from transmission. Car drives fine, fluids all OK, tranny fluid is still red and clean and level is good. No noise unless moving.....once up to speed it doesn't get louder or faster with increased mph, seems steady......slows to stop with braking. Took it into a shop today and they said that it definately transmission noise, not wheel bearing like I suspected (or hoped). Any ideas? Thanks Dave |

I have a 00 with 55k and I get the growl noise when in park or neutral. Dealer said a bad bearing somewhere in trans but I can remember which one. The car runs great and the noise doesnt effect anything so I am affraid to have them f with the transmission and cause something worse to happen.

Fix Found!!!
I took my car to a garage and was told that the noise was from the transmission. I took it to a tranny shop and they said it was a bad wheel bearing.........and it was!! Had the tranny filter and fluid changed while I was there.........and a new bearing (hub) put in. Sounded like it was from tranny but a trained ear detected otherwise.
