engine shuts off while driving, ECT cause it?

i put a new fuel pump in the car a week ago and it ran fan then two days ago it wouldn't start up so i checked voltage at the pump, nothing, checked it going to the circuit pack in the trunk and got it there, checked the harness under that circuit pack, nothing, checked the pump to make sure it was still good and it was. so i took apart the circuit pack put it back together and nothing on both ends. moved to the front of the car, checked all fuses/relays and all of those were good but no voltage running across them. put new battery in and tried to start car and nothing. so finally i put everything back together as if i was going to drive off in it and it cranked up and ran. well today i'm heading to work and it died twice on me. first time i was exiting the highway and the motor shut off but i knew i still had electric in the car b/c the clock was still on but the battery idiot light came on. i popped the hood fiddled around a harness connection by the sc & valve cover and then cranked the car right up so i closed the hood and drive off. second time i'm driving down the highway (10minutes later) and it shuts off again, no light this time. pop the hood mess with the same harness and it cranked right up again so drive on off to work and no problems since. drove all the way home w/o any problems. also after the second time i didn't turn the radio or the air on. i get home and check to see what harness that was and it turns out it runs to the ECT sensor, so.. my question is if the ECT was not relaying a signal back to the pcm would it cause the motor to shut off? my temp guage has been working and never peaked above 180 all day.

Re: engine shuts off while driving, ECT cause it?

no resistor on 01+, hard wired from box to trunk then to fuel pump. pump running pressure fine and voltage checks out with specs. ses light came on an hour ago while i was testing it again, pulled the code and registered p1404 so i'm doing a top engine clean and oil change this weekend but i don't think that is related. also if i put a o2 sim post cat on there will it stop codes like that one or do i need the egr simulator, don't want to do an egr blockoff.

well if the pcm is getting a bad or no enginge coolant temperature, it will cause some bad running since it does heavily effect fuel delivery and timing.

Re: engine shuts off while driving, ECT cause it?

p1404 is an error b/w the learned egr position and what it actually reads. the pcm compares the egr leanred minumum position to the egr position sensor when the egr valve is commandeded closed. if the egr position sensor indicates that the egr valve is open when the pcm is commanding the egr valve closed the dtc will set. normally caused by faulty egr or carbon build up that restricts/malfunctions the pintle or seat.

Re: engine shuts off while driving, ECT cause it?

had reply from another forum and they said it was their cps (crankshaft position sensor), they replaced it and problem solved. my symptoms are similar except my trac off light does not come on when the motor shuts off and it doesn't stay on if i start it back up in neutral while rolling. i'll check gmpd for the cost of the part and if not too expensive i'll spend a weekend changing it.

An EGR code. Hmm. If your car is in coast mode and the egr valve is sticking open, then your car will most likely stall when the rpms drop from foot being taken off the accelerator. On a typical egr valve car, if you make the egr valve open, at low rpms it will stall out instantly. Youo may want to look at that first.

nope, this is not egr related, the same code has popped up before so i've become pretty aware of how to fix that problem. it hadn't stalled out on me in the last couple of days or even felt like it was going to but i'll almost bet it will in the future and when it does i'll end up changing the cps and go from there.

Re: engine shuts off while driving, ECT cause it?

took car down to firestone for inspection this morning and stalling was horrific, died 5 times on the way down there and an engine light finally popped up. hooked up and had diagnosis run, egr code popped up saying pintle stuck closed, figured that would have something to do with stalling and then later in the day i get a call and they ran a pressure test and said the fuel pump might be bad as it's not putting out enough pressure to keep the motor running. it's a brand new fuel pump installed less than 2 weeks ago. i think the fuel regulator might have something to do with this but not sure so looking for ya'lls suggestions. when i pick the car up i hope to get the numbers it was throwing for psi etc. they're replacing the egr, fuel filter, cleaning injectors etc. has anybody here had any problem with items bought from gmpartsdirect and their warranties state honored by manufacturer which is ac delco so any parts store that deals with them do an exchange? guess it'll take a few calls, emails, and faxes for that.

that's why I mentioned the egr valve will cause stalling if it's sticking. Creates a huge vaccumm leak.

Re: engine shuts off while driving, ECT cause it?

yeah the dealership try to pull some dumb shi* like that saying it was the egr a few months ago and wanted to charge $500 for a new egr and reprogram pcm, but i fixed that problem by replacing the spark plug wires by the o2 sensor that were cut. egr was replaced today along with a few other misc parts and during the injector cleaning the car stalled and hasn't been able to start back up so i'm down to replacing the CPS, fuel regulator, or hitting delco up on that fuel pump warranty. after that it's heading to the next location that will flood around here.
