Cool 1992 lincoln continental can't get car in park

the shift column on this car is loose now i cant' get the car in park. been putting the car in rev and setting the park brake i'm able to start in neutral. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

Sounds like a spotweld broke loose in the column assembly. I've also heard of a sub-assembly working loose at the far end of the column, simply tightening it up corrects the problems. In any case, the column will have to come out to get a better idea of the actual cause.

I had this problem and had to have my shifting tube assembly replaced in the column. However, there are two screws under the dash that your shifting cable is connected to. They mount a bracket to the shifting tube. Hopefully if they worked loose (which is common) you can tighten them up and have your problem fixed. If the ears from the cast tube are broken, you will have to replace it. Fairly cheap parts (under $50 for the tube and shaft if yours is bent like mine was) but a pain to change.
