98 Silverado Differential

Hi. I'm pretty new here and am learning alot. Thanks everyone! One thing I have learned is that quite a few of you have the same problems as I. Last week I finally had my trans redone with the thicker plate, shift kit and Corvett servo. This sure as heck beats the "having to turn off the key then restarting before getting off the highway" thing to avoid the Mac truck that would rearend me when shifting from 1st to 2nd. This weekend I will clean the contacts on the Fuel Guage sending unit so that maybe my guage will work. I am having some other issues though.

My standard differential (2wd) has been clunking upon shifting. I pulled the cover and noticed what I would call quite a bit of play between the pin and the carrier and the pin and the spiders. Is this normal?

Also, my Power Brake Unit recently went out. Does anyone know if this is one of those "factory fix for free safty items"?

Anyway, thanks again for all of the great info.

If there is play between the pin and the carrier you may need a new carrier. I have never seen one, But have been told by several people that it is not uncommon for the hole to elongate. If it is just in the spiders the pin and spiders are easily replaced, But even new ones will have some play because it is like a bearing clearance and the diff lube acts like a cushion of sorts between the gears and the pin.

Thanks Thunderbolt. The "elongated hole" could give me the excuse to get that limited slip diff.
