'98 stereo removal
Hello, I have a 98 protege and I cant seem to figure out how to remove the stock stereo to install my aftermarket head unit. I've tried sticking allen wrenches into the little holes on each side of the unit, as was suggested by someone on another forum, as well as using a thin screwdriver to push on the plastic clips that I'm told hold it in place. I have ran out of ideas and suggestions, does anyone have any experience with these units? Is there some sort of trick to it?

Re: '98 stereo removal
you need a set (two) of double DIN removal tools. They cost about three bucks at walmart or an autoparts store. Slide them into the holes, push gently outward and pull the whole unit out. I've done it with finishing nails before but it isn't worth the trouble.

Re: '98 stereo removal
It's possible to remove without tools made for the job but I agree, they are cheap and work better than a bent up coat hanger.
What helped me without the tools in a 99 was taking the glove-box out and then I could push a little reaching up, but the angle is so odd I couldn't reach through and do anything else at the same time. |
