poor gas mileage help

Thanks for helping with the front end noise. i also forgot mention i checked my gas mileage and i'm getting about 20 mpg. it's a 4 cylinder and i drive conservatively. i would have expected much better mileage. it's a '99 alero. does anyone have any thoughts about this or what i should check? How many miles do you have on it? Have you changed the plugs, wires, fuel filter and air filter lately? I know GM says that the plugs and wires can go until 100K miles, but I plan to do mine at 60K miles. The air filter could be playing a huge roll in this problem if it hasn't been changed in a while. Also, have you ever had a fuel induction service on the car? It's about $120 at the stealership. They clean the injectors and service the throttle body. This helped with my 3.1L Malibu I used to have. I would look into it.

The car has 60,000 on it and i just bought it. yea, maybe you're right...it just needs a good tune up and air filter. i will check those things right away. particularly the air filter and plugs. i think on fuel injection, it compensates for a clogged filter though and that doesn't affect your gas mileage the way a clogged filter on a carb would. at least it seems that would be the case. doesn't matter though...if it's clogged , it needs to be changed and i will check those things. thanks for the advice.

If your filter is clogged or has been clogged, there is a good chance your injectors don't look too good either.

Let me know how things turn out after you check that air filter.

Also, if you don't want to replace the plugs you can have them cleaned and re-gapped. If I were you, I would check the gap and clean them before you replace them.

The plugs on the 2.4L are extremely easy to get to. Just take off the black cover that says "2.4L". The plugs are right under that.

I have a 2000 Alero, standard 5 speed, 4 cylinder 2.4 twin cam.

I am Horrible with math.. and so could someone check my milage and see if this is correct.

I recorded recently my fuel consumption as such;
423 km/42 liters = 10.07 km/L

= 22.96 KM/Gallon

or
= 14 miles/Gallon?


Is this correct? I'm canadian so we dont work in Gallons or miles too often but I want to check my milage against the standards laid out by Aero owners in this forum.

If I'm correct than it would seem I'm getting horrible mileage. But I suspect my math is wrong. P.S. Not reading alot of good things about the alero but i just boguth mine and it seems to run perfect - gas milage aside.
please help...
