Grand Caravan dies

I'm having the same problem. I've replaced the fuel filter, still dies. My Next step is to clean the throttle body and IAC motor, check ignition wires. maybe try removing the fuel valve on the passenger side of the fuel rail, clean it and reinstall.
have you had any luck?

My 97 caravan is doing the same thing. It cuts out after about 20 min of driving. It only dies if I am slowing down, when my foot is off the gas. It does start back up if I start it using the gas, which I don't normally do. I already had a tune-up and was heading down to get a fuel pump when I read over your notes. I've have had it checked by three different dealers and no codes show up, therefore it seems to be a guessing game. One person said maybe the fuel injectors? I don't know. Any help would be appreciated

I have 96 Caravan that is demonstrating similar problems. The car was driving fine, then after about 10 minutes it just shut off. Thankfully I was not going that fast. The car restarted with the service engine soon light coming on. After that the car putted and had zero power. There was a lot of smoke and it would eventually die. I could restart it and rev it up and was able to go about two blocks and it woould die again. Sounds a lot like the problems everyone else has. Any Ideas?????

Yours could be the automatic Idle Speed motor, from what you're describing. The AIS motor holds the idle constant, and when the motor fails, causes the motor to fall below idle, causing the stalling. Had mine replaced a few years ago on my 1994 3.0. the part was around $70.00 if I remember correctly. I think it's located on the throttle body. Good luck

Ok heres an update. I just replaced the fuel pump. STILL JUST CUT OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING. Not as often as it was before at least not yet. I am so frustriated. Somthing is telling the fuel pump to quit pumping the gas. I wish I could find out what it is. There are no codes to check.
I guess the next thing is the Computer itself. Another 250.00. I will keep posting till I figure it out. Dang it if I have to get a Dodge engineer on the phone. Someone has bound to know.

Re: Re: 96 Caravan 3.3 shutdown issue.

I don't know if this relates but my Chrysler Town & Country, 93, used to quit running if I braked firmly while turning. Problem was the battery was physically too small for the metal box it sits in. It would slide forward/sideways & thus pull & slightly disconnect a connector in a small wire harness a few inches away. (it pulled only enough to break the connection, but not enough to completely unplug -- so I did not notice the disconnection) That cut off power to the engine controls & everything stopped. I just cut a block of wood to fit the empty space in the battery box & fastened it in. That was 2 years ago -- problem never recurred.

Had the same problem last year, except that pcm gave me error code.
Change crankshaft position sensor located in the transaxle bellhousing, since no more problem

May be the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. Try removing and cleaning. It supplies the air to the intake while in idle(foot off gas). Flush the ports with fresh oil. A nudge on the plunger with a small screw driver might help too. Real easy to clean. I just went through the same thing on an explorer.

Re: 96 caravan cuts off while driving

You may want to check/replace the crankshaft position sensor and or camshaft position sensor. These only apply if you have the 3.3 or 3.8 engine. I know that these sensors can fail like this and chrysler did have a problem in those years with emf interference from the plug wires affecting signals from those sensors. If either of these sensors goes intermittent, the pcm will assume the engine is not running and shut down the fuel pump. A Tech with a scanner should be able to figure out this one just look at the signals from these sensors and observe what happens when the engine dies. It is not a guessing game - sometime fault codes alone tell you little or nothing. Let me know what happens.

Re: 96 caravan cuts off while driving

I agree with gforster. Here is another thing to look for: I have a 1994 grand caravan and experienced similar things. I changed the fuel pump and ran okay for a little while and the about a month later same things were happening. Replaced it again. Same stuff happened. Then I got curious because it seem as though it was not getting enough fuel. So there are two lines that carry fuel>one in and one out. I checked the one coming in located atop the engine. They are both metal lines. I looked down into it and found gunk almost filling the line. I replaced the line and all of my nightmares went away. Again with very similar problems I would imagine this to be the problem and a scanner would not be able to find it!
