Tie Rods?

I went and test drove a 91 240SX with an SR20 and Silvia Face. the engine seemed fine except for a little more smoke than i would like to have seen at start up (no cat). once out on the road it had a few rattles and the exhaust vibrated on something like a Mofo but other wise it felt fine. he let me punch it in 3rd and at around 6-6.5 (no speedo) the steering started to vibrate (not scary amounts but im sure i it did it for more than 10min your hands would fall asleep) i remember reading something a while ago that this type vibration was the tie rods? but the guy had also mentioned that the Chassis had been straightend from a wreck? im just wondering if theres a good chance this is in the tie rods? or if anyone has any insight into the Exhaust rattle (5Zigen)?

Re: Tie Rods?

hmm yea i remember something about the tie rods affecting that too...i know my car steering wheel shakes at about 60-65mph but at all other mph its fine....and i know my bushings are shot in my tie rod ends so yes that could be the prob. But also if the frame was bent ya never know it might be straight but not perfect ya know what i mean. and exhaust rattle...hmmmm dunno about that. Does the exhaust vibrate at a certain rpm too? Does the car have a heat sheild? cuz i know those are like baby rattles if not tightend. i took mine off. But the car has work done to it so it probably doesnt have.

one of the local 240 owners says the exhaust rattle is just because of shitty exhaust fitment and bushings... as for the Frame. if some Kazama End links dont cure the vibration ill either work out some sort of bracing or get a new Chassis.

either way im getting it thursday.

hey R.W. where are you located man? i test drove a sil80 like that a couple of weeks ago and you explained it perfectly. was it a blue sil80 with 18 in 5zigen wheels, greedy bov, and turbo timer?? cuz the one i drove had a 5zigen exhaust too, and it rattled a bit like around the driver's side in the engine bay. i still almost ended up buying it, but i fell $1k short.....

Re: Tie Rods?

My steering wheel wobble was due to tire balance. It used to start shaking at about the same speed and after I got new tires, the shake went away. Exhaust, make sure it isn't hitting anywhere on the bottom of the car and that little tow hook on back. I had to cut that thing off so my N1 would stop hitting it.

oh really? the brakes were that bad huh. i know all that raddling was a concern when i drove it, i would of never guess the brakes were that bad tho. and yes that shift knob sucked, he had it on backwards too so that didnt help. but yea, he suggested i go with z32 brakes too, but you got the car instead, so its not my concern any more, lol

Well my 240SX friend it looks like im joining the Suck at Life Club.

5 days after i bought it coming out of a gas station at 6500RPM 85-95% thottle. Uh oh! apparently whoever did the swap was too good for an aftermarket Fuel pump... and now im stuck with uber Rod Knock. im so pissed at myself its not even funny... hindsights 20-20 and now that i think about it i knew i should have checked the Pump...

i have yet to decide what to do.
