Surburban Transmission

I have a 96 Chevy Suburban and while driving it the other night, it made a loud clank and the front end came up. Then later the next day, I was backing up out of my driveway the same happened and then a loud whizzing/whirling (for lack of a better word) sound followed. It will now not go in reverse! It will go forward; however, the loud whizzing sound remains. Any ideas what it might be? I have only had the vehicle for a year and it has a little less than 150,000 miles.

No need to tell you that it doesn't sound good. I have a 93 suburban 2500, and at 197,000 miles reverse went out. According to my tranny mechanic, the reverse clutch is the smallest, and most prone to go out, even though it's the least likely to be used.

You should check the tranny fluid. If it's brown, or smells burnt then you've more than likely burned up the clutch. Bottom line you're going to need to take it to a tranny mech, and you're probably looking at about $1600 to rebuild. Suburbans are known to be tow vehicles, so even though you've only had it for a year, there is nothing to say that the previous owner didn't pull a boat, or a 34' trailer with it.

When you build a new trans, have it filled with Red Line D4 ATF, this stuff is THE ANSWER (besides oil coolers)!

I found it on my BMW Club tech line. It's $10 a quart but it is the only ATF that prevents bearing frag due to lack of lubrication by conventional ATF, even Mobil 1. Bearings usually fail before clutches, but they take everything elwe with them when they go.

Maybe you've heard of Corvette racer/builder Dick Guldstrand? He does the chasis work on my 64 and will only put Red Line D4 in his 500-700 hp street cars with automatics.

What happend to your sub is the Drive shell broke, very very common problem. Time for a rebuild sorry.
