I am looking for a speedometer gauge for the dash, for my mom's car. It's a 1992 Ford Escort 1.9 Liter. I called the dealership...and they said it is "obsolete," basically. I called a speedometer repair place, and they do sell parts, but they don't have that. But of course they, as all places say, said the typical "You can bring it in and we can try to fix it." Not to mention the probably $300+ that they would want to charge, I'm sure.
Do any of you know of any place (if possible, around the Atlanta, Georgia surrounding areas) where I can buy this gauge without this hassle? I know the first answer a lot of people would have is, "Go check out the junk yard." But...well...I would like to know that it is actually going to work. Soooo...any ideas or suggestions, anyone? Thanks in advance. |

I have one here in my shop somewhere but I need to look for it. I do know that it came out of a 1995 mercury tracer. You will need to find out if it is the same. Meanwhile I will look for the one I think I have.

if you really really want to make sure, go to the dealership and ask them if those two speedometers are the same, they should haev the same part numbers, but I am like 99% positive that they are the same.

Okay everyone,
I'm not all that "techy" with cars and stuff, but I just want to mention/ask something else. I know I was discussing previously about replacing the entire gauge/panel. The bottom line was that the speedometer on my mother's car stopped working a while back. The needle does not "bounce" or anything like that. Neither does the mileage or the thing that you can reset to see how many miles you've gone for a certain trip. My mother and I took it to a shop several days ago, and the guy there seemed to think that it was the "spring" somewhere in the gauge back there, which was not working to push up the speedometer needle or something like that. However, the guys working at that shop were quite heavyset and obviously the guy wasn't interested in crawling under the dash or whatever...so this may have been a "reason" for us to not have it serviced there. Maybe they didn't want to do the work. I don't know for sure...but something isn't right. I was thinking earlier...what in the world does this "spring" that he mentioned have to do these problems with the mileage and tripodometer not advancing? The "spring" theory seemed reasonable at first for just the needle, but it doesn't seem reasonable at all for that to be the cause of the mileage not advancing. While I don't know much about cars, it seems very logical to me that the cable would be more of a problem as to why the mileage is not advancing, rather than a "spring." I also accept the possibility that maybe some type of gear that advances the mileage may have broken somehow. But I'm thinking it may be as simple as just replacing the speedometer cable. Can someone please walk me through with some basic step-by-step instructions as to how to change this cable? I do know that it apparently goes down and screws into the transmission somewhere. There is also an RPM gauge to the right of the speedometer gauge...so obviously that's going to have a cable for itself, also. Does this one also plug into the transmission? That's rather confusing...how can I tell for sure which one is the one for the speedometer? Will I be able to just "follow" it down to the transmission? Thanks for the help in advance. |

I believe mshelby is parting out an 94 escort and said that if you pay for shipping and a few bucks for gas he/she would get you the part you need. Heres the link to that thread. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=269434

To my knowledge nothing is screwed or bolted, if you look at the speedo cable under the hood you should see what looks like a clip where it goes into the speed sensor. if that is the case on your car just grasp the cable firmly at its base and pull straight up (DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE THE CLIP) it will remain in the speed sensor just push you new speedo cable back into the sensor and make sure it is all the way in. Under the dash... Again there is nothing to unscrew or bolt. There is a clip fixed to th rear of the speedo head, when you put your hand on the cable use your thumb to depress the the clip and pull straight back, when reinstalling it wake sure the cable is fully seated and you here it click into place. That should cover all of it. If you have any questions let me know, if you are unsure about doing the job then seek out a garage to do it. |

JMR..... I found the speedo head I said I had it is for a 1995 Escort and shows 38k miles on it. If you want it you can have it for free you just pay the shipping I also have a set of Ford rear brake shoes for a 1995 escort you can have for free also.
Just let me know if you want them. |
