timing belt

Here is what happened. Short version:
I have a 1994 Ford Ranger 2.3 liter. My timing belt broke while I was driving it. I got the new one put on but it is running funny. When you try to give it full gas it doesn't want to go. From about half throttle to matted it has no power. It kind of acts like it does if you hit a rev limiter. It also idles a little rough. Could the belt be a tooth off? The timing marks on the cam and crank were not lined up perfect but they did not look like they were a whole tooth off. Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds exactly like your belt is a tooth off. It can be hard to line up the timing marks just right. After you had the belt on did you turn the motor over two times and check the alignments again? Did you make sure cyl #1 was at TDC when the marks were lined up?

Moved it one tooth and it is running the way it did before the belt broke. The only thing is when I line up the cam mark the mark on the crank pully is between TC and 30. The Haynes book says it should be on TC. Can't figure this out but it runs great so I don't care. This has been a great motor/truck. I have 270000 miles and have only fixed minor things. This belt being the most major. Changed heater core last winter. FORD trucks are the best.

Yea, I had to replace a broken timing belt on my '94 Ranger Splash a few months back. Good God, what a bear of a job. Adjusted it by sight, truck runs pretty good, and haven't put a timing light to it yet, although I suspect it might be off by a tooth. I believe that is being compensated for by the ignition. I sort of remember that the book said it should be at 20 degrees *** before *** TDC for the 2.3L engine.
