I am in the market for a 2000/2001 Silverado base model with extended cab V6. After reading the posts, most everyone say that the V6 actually use more gas than a V8 when under load. Can anyone with a V6 5sp manual transmission tell me how their gas mileage is???
I am looking mainly for an everyday truck w/ good gas mileage for use with occassional hauling and plenty of hill driving; no boat hauling. Any suggestions would be appreciated. tia |

this is just a personal thing but I would not get a full size truck with a V6 in it again. My last truck was a dodge ram with a six banger in it and it did good around town but driving down the freeway with a head wind or going up big hills and it just didn't have the power. If you look hard enough you can find a silverado with a V8 (4.8 or 5.3) in it for about the same price as a V6. The V8 do get good gas mileage, I just drove from dallas TX to albuquerque NM (650 miles one way) and only used less than 1 1/2 tanks. if you want better gas mileage drop your tailgate or get a tonnue (sp) cover.

Re: 2000/01 Silverado buying suggestions?
Also know two people with 00 and 01 Silverado with V-6, extremely bad vibration. The dealer welded balancing weights all over as per GM bulletin to fix this problem. Helped but didn't cure their vibration. Was told the vibration was from the engine. I have a 00 with 5.3 no vibration at all.

Re: 2000/01 Silverado buying suggestions?
You won't be dissappointed if you opt for a V-8. For what you want, the 4.8L would be just fine. You should be able to get a base Silverado with the 4.8 and 4WD for less then $14k (those trucks only cost about $24K brand new in that configuration).
However, if you could afford it, the 5.3 is just a jewl of an engine. It has tons of power and gets good fuel mileage when compared to other full size trucks. If you do decide on the V-6, then I suggest only getting a regular cab truck. I know you will loose the added conveniance of the extedned cab (you'll also loose a few hundred pounds which equals better fuel mileage and the feeling of more power), but the 4.3L would do OK in a regular cab truck.

Re: 2000/01 Silverado buying suggestions?
I love the 88 through99 chevy trucks. I`m not so sure about the 00 up. I read about a lot of complaints. I wish GM kept the good ole 350,best engine I`ve ever drove. My work truck is a 98 4.3 V6 seems to do good on gas, not sure on exact milage. It has way more power than my POS 93 Ford 302. The chevy 4.3 is a 350 with 2 cylinders lopped off. Good motor, not shure on long term reliabilty
