1982 caprice problems

Hello all i'm new to the site and i just bought a 1982 chevy caprice with a 305 in it. i got it for less than 300 dollars at an auction i runs perfect but i just found out the light arent hooked up to the column. someone told me i needed a dimmer switch so i went and got one now what do i do thanx again

Okay your light switch is on the left side of the dash! The nob might be missing which would be why you missed it! look for a small metal shaft that is three sided! Also the shafts have been known to pull out of the switch! so it could be missing also. Before you tear the dash out to replace the switch go to your loacl parts store. They sometimes have just the shaft/w a nob. If not get one from a junkyard. Any gm car or truck that vintage will have the parts you need! Then all you have to do is insert it into the switch.Pull out one notch for parking lights,two notches for headlights,rotate left or right to dim the dashlights. rotate clockwise all the way for the dome light! The dimmer switch is the brights switch. It's located on the floor all the way left. If you don't see it just push down the parking brake . The switch should be right next to the pedal if not its been removed and will need replaced.
