Re: OD on or off?
If your cruisin on the highway, or even in town leave it on. The tranny will automatically switch it on or off as needed. There are some situations when the tranny will try to switch it on and off too much, like when towing (in a truck anyway) or going up lots of steep hills, or passing lots of groups of cars when the tranny will down shift. In these cases you disable OD by turning it off to prevent wear and tear on the tranny. Ive also heard that on many new electronic atx's overdrive simply locks the torque converter.

just leave OD on all the time, if you cruise in 3rd gear at hwy speeds all the time, its not too good for your tranny. Anyways, your car will shift into 3rd when it needs it

thats what i thought the guy said he always leaves it off and that he only puts it on when he goes on the highway or up steep hills. So i should always leave it on unless im going up a hill ok got it thanks for the help.

your mixed up there, you want OD off when going up a hill. Just think of it like this, it controls whether you are in 3rd or 4th gear. Frankly, i'd just leave it on, and leave it alone, if your going up a hill, just give your car enough gas and it'll switch into 3rd for you.
As for manuals, they have overdrive, or i should say overdrives. The 5-speeds have 2 overdrives and the 6-speeds have 3 overdrives. Overdrive is a gear with the gear ratio is less than 1:1. Now, they dont have overdrive buttons, they just manually put it into the gear.

Re: OD on or off?
I've always wondered about this too since my sister's Eclipse is an auto. Thanks guys. I'll let her know to just leave the OD on all the time.

Re: OD on or off?
Leave the OD on at all times. Turn it off and push the Power button into the ON position when you desire to go fast....

The only time I don't use OD is with my Honda when I'm towing one of the boats.

Re: OD on or off?
What exactly does he POWER button do? doesnt it tell the engine to use more gas makin more HP? i know that my car is a lot faster when its in PWR , and that the gas needle will drop much rapidly than if it were in ECO

Re: OD on or off?
Power button allows for higher RPM's on the auto. Yes it consumes more fuel but it does also delivers more power
