Honker 2 CanAm 1967 Progress & Complete

The Honker 2 was run by Holman&Moody for Mario Andretti in 1967 Season. Although its striking lines it was never competitive. Mario even made an offer to the sponsor Paul Newman to change the roles: Paul could drive the car and he would write his name on it.


The kit is in 1/43rd from Marsh Models. The wheels incl. the tires and the body are cast in resin. The other parts are white metal. There are two photoetched sheets. The wheel inserts and the inlet trumpets are turned aluminum.

I'm really enjoying this forum because everyone seems to bring out the most unique stuff to build. Honker was an incredible looking car that was an incredible mess to drive on track, and it's good to see it getting built.

By the way, do the instructions guide you to what color to use to replicate Honker's finish?

Looking forward to seeing you build this up 01iver. There certinly were some wierd and very wonderful machines run in CANAM. Unfortunaltey for all their efforts none of them could catch the McLarens and then the Porshes.

The insctruction says a color called "Vauxhall silk violet". It's similar to "Opel tech violet" (dupli-color 20-1270) which was easy to find. I will use it with the airbrush:

CanAm cars are very cool.....so many different shapes, colors styles......some wild machines. I wish they weren't so ignored by model companies. Nice build so far. I want to see this one done.

I must admit that i'm not 100% sure about the color. In some pictures it looks more pink. But like all metallic colors it's hard to say from photos...

Update:
I have sprayed the Opel 'tech violet' which is a close match to the provided paint chip, but I was unhappy with the result.
The color seemed to be much too dark and to blue in comparison with the reference pictures. So i have decided to strip the paint and start all over again. Stripping is no problem with resin kits, just put it in ordinary thinner for a couple of minutes. One of the big advantages of these kits (and for people like me who tend to mess up paint-jobs).

So I took a new attempt and tried to mix the paint myself. I achieved a very close match by mixing metallic purple and silver appr. half-half:

Painful to have to strip the first coat but the second mix of paint is much better. So well worth it in the end.
You still need to be careful stripping resin kits. Sennake had a Panoz explode on him a while back Not sure what he was using or how long he immersed it though.

Phil,
ordinary thinner is fine and usually won't hurt resin. IIRC, Sennake used either brake fluid or Super Clean and the model soaked up the fluid causing the body to, as you say...basically explode!
