Was the 4th gen a big improvement over the 3rd gen or flop?
Just thought this would make a good thread topic. Just give your opinions.

Re: Was the 4th gen a big improvement over the 3rd gen or flop?
3rd gen wasn't as great as the 4gen kick ass carbs i must say Honda makes some sweet carbs but suspension wasn't anywhere near 4th gens looks are dated they just didn't hold like 4th 5th gens.

the 4th gen was a revolutionary civic. It was the first chassis with a true d series, the first chassis for updated OBD0 electronics, and it gave birth to the 2g honda CRX which is the most recognizable honda ever IMO

4th Gen was the first of the truly refined Civics. The First gen is still the most fun of all the Civics though - light and infinitely more thrashable than any other.

Re: Was the 4th gen a big improvement over the 3rd gen or flop?
the 3rd gen was lame it only came with a crappy carb (unless u got lucky with a Si) and it had a stupid rear BEAM in the rear not to mention it had torsion bars in the front for springs and a really horrible placement of the radiator along with everything else in the engine compartment was CRAMMED the 4th gen gave the honda enthousiests MUCH more to look forward too... Rear independent suspension.. better front suspension with mcpherson struts all around. A D series motor with better feul injection and in Japan had an optional B16 that produced 100hp per lleater with option LSD. this was a all around bad ass honda not to mention that is the car they based the acura integra off of in 90 after the civic had been out for 2 years and running strong the 4th gen was the platform for all civics after 92-00 thats a LONG running japaneese car specially one that can be changed sooo much. Not many car companies (japan) can claim thier car is a icon or that all thier cars share sooo much in common that just about every part can be changed or upgraded..
Thats my 2cents

Re: Was the 4th gen a big improvement over the 3rd gen or flop?
1st gens had a londer run than any other Civic - '73-'79. The 3rd gen Si ran a ZC that had a power to weight ratio that was close to the EF9s - if not as good (EF9s are heavy beasts, unlike the rest of the EF/EE/ED range. Plus the ZC is actually a better low-down motor than the B16A. The first B16As came out in the DA6 Integras and were then closelly followed by the EF8 CRX and EF9 CRX. The 3rd gen torsion and beam setup was actually quite good.
EGs and Eks are a revamp of the EF platform but practically nothing is interchangable without mods. In fact, an EF9 has next to nothing that is interchangable with any other EF or ED - they are a shit for parts, especially second hand. Sorry - but personally I rate the 1st gen RS1200 (JDM) over the EF9 SiR - in fact, my 120bhp bored and stroked 1200 '76 SBC was as quick (if not quicker than) my stock EF9. 600 kilos vs 1030 for the SiR is a huge power to weight penalty. 4th gens are refined, but the 1G and 3G were great cars. |

Re: Was the 4th gen a big improvement over the 3rd gen or flop?
yep - ALLMTR over here (Australia) ran his 3rd gen with B20/B16 CRVTEC on toda cams etc for a 12 second 1/4 mile. The thing was an absolute beast as it was set up for strip. I stick to my guns - the 3rd gen was a good little beast
