in my dads vette at the street races:C5 VETTE VS 5.0 VS LIGHTNING

my dad tells me to take his vette out for a cruise(he tends to do this when my g/f comes over, what a dad) so i did

him: AND DON'T BE STREET RACING, THAT CAR CAN KILL YA
me: ok

so after cruising for awhile i decide to see if anyone is at the everett street races. as i'm pulling in, 2 vw vr6's are pulling out followed by a lightning. so i turn the vette around and follow.
we end up at another parking lot and the lightning comes up.

him: whats up with the street races dude
me:i don't know i aint been here in awhile
him: well were about to go check out some other spots
me: i'll be behind you

before we can leave a 5.0 stang drives up and sounds monsterous.

him: is that a Z06?
me: na, base model
him: what year?
me: 98, no mods
him: dude we gotta race, follow me i know a place to go race at
me: hold on, what you got under there to wanna race so bad?
him: dude its a 5.0 how fast can it be

then he laughs a little and we go.
we get to the spot and the stang is on my right, the lightning gets on my left. the 2 vw vr6's are behind us and one gets out to flag.
3, 2, 1......with the auto in first i eat them both from the jump, shifting to 2nd directly at redline. i look back and the stang is only 1 1/2 cars behind me. the lightning isn't even half a car behind him with his bumber next to the stangs door. i shift to 3rd and my g/f told me once i shut down i was somewhere around 120mph

him: that was awwwsome, dude that was my first time loosing
me: nothing bad about loosing to a vette
him: lets run it one more time

this time i'm on the right, the stang gets on my left and one of the vr6's gets on the left of the stang. the guy in the 5.0 looks at the golf and says "good luck dude" with a smerk on his face and the engines roar
3, 2, 1...... from first once again eating him from the jump, shift to second milla seconds before redline, and as i look behind, the stang is again only 1 1/2 cars behind me, and the vr6 is exactly were the lightning was, front bumber on the stangs door.
i shut her down and we go back to starting point.

him: (as he gets out his car and runs to my window) i just wanna shake your hand dude, you inspired me to really do some work on my car man.
me: thanks nice meeting ya bruh
him: you to man, i'm gonna find you again when i do some more to my car.

and off we went

that is definitly one quick 5.0 stang. most of them are mostly stock and they are hardly that fast. what do automatic vettes run in the 1/4 anyways? i'm assuming that its similar to what the lightning runs. unless GM makes that great of a auto tranny where you don't lose much to a 6 speed. anyways sounds fun. congrats on your kills. that vr6 also sounded like its got balls.

yeah i just looked at car-stats.com and automatic vettes do run similar times to a lightning. they run a 13.8 at 103mph.

well from what i heard from corvette guys and camaro guys is that the auto is just as fast as the manual.
i've seen in a couple places were the auto c5 vette ran 13.5 which is .1 sec off form the 13.4 they ran with the stick.
the guys in the maro forum can speak more on the trannie of that car. its a hell of a trannie, i'll tell ya that.
and with the lightning 2 cars behind me, i'm sure i was about .4 sec ahead of him
