Re: Who makes Duramax

Isuzu, they were chosen by Chevrolet because of their design expertise, production capability and performance record for building high quality products. Isuzu is a world leader in diesel engine design and development, and has produced more than 13 million diesel engines in the past six decades.

The Duramax is also remarkebly quiet for a diesel engine.

Re: Who makes Duramax

Indeed, Isuzu does make the Duramax, and they are definitely a world class engine builder, have had several of their engines in excavators, skidsteers, and associated equipment.

However, when it comes to pickup trucks, get the cummins. The only downside being you have to buy a dodge to get one. I'll take the dark side please, rather have a truck that rides like a truck, with a good powertrain, than a truck that rides like a car, with problems.

Just me and my humble opinion.

My brother said the Cummins Dodge is a good motor with a piece of crap wrapped around it.

Re: Who makes Duramax

Keep in mind, I am located in a small market here, and even based around that, I have seen quite a number of Duramax equipped trucks with fuel system issues, including pumps and injectors. Other issues with the truck include an endless supply of wiring problems throughout, and the allison trans is proving up to be less than it was hyped to be. Wonderful unit, just does not function well in cold climates, especially when you really need it to work.

Beyond that, nice trucks, for someone else.

02, if you would like further, specific info on failures, PM me, and I will fill you in.

The Duramax did have some fuel issues but they were mostly resolved with the new model year. I have heard so many horror stories about the Cummins, I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

Re: Who makes Duramax

The cummins is so friggin loud thats the only thing I don't like about them, other than that to each his own. I have never owned either so really can't say which would be the better engine. My brother has an 02 with the Duramax that he bought new and he pulls his camper and ski boat he absolutely raves about the power and has yet to have a problem with the truck.

Re: Who makes Duramax

Duramax is a Joint venture between GM and Isuzu. The company that makes it is called DMAX ltd. I work at DMAX, so of course i think the duramax is the better of the engines. We had fuel problems early on with the Bosch pumps and injectors, but 04's design cured all of those issues. I drive an 03 and have absolutely no problem with the motor or tranny so far. I'll be pulling a 28' enclosed trailer with a Lowrider in it and won't even worry about what's back there. I hear the cummins is also a great engine, Just a shitty truck built around it.
