think my carb is shot

damn car started yesterday after a long ass time of me trying and now won't start yet agian. so i think my carb is shot to shit because its been running really really rich too just shoots out black smoke when you first start it not a lot of smoke just a little not too worried about that what im worried about it the liquid like carbon that it spits out all over the place does anyone know what causes this problem??
