I Am Totally Amazed At The Complete Contrast Wether Dex-cool Or Green Is Best For Alum. Engines...one Gentlemen States That The Reason Gm Switched From Green To Dex Was Because The Green Antifreeze Was Eating The Alum. Engines Up..another Refers To Dex-cool As Acid Running Throuhg Your Motor Eating Gaskets Up..and Yet Another In The Auto Industry Switched From Dex To Green And Also Refers To The Opinions Of Mechanics As Favoring Green Over Dex...one Gentlemen Says After Changing Over To Green He Had Nothing But Problems, then Switched Back To Dex And Everything Was Ok..wow!!! What A Contrast In Opinions....does Anyone Else Have Any Input On This Issue...i'm Planning On Flushing Out My System And Want To Use Whats Best For The 4.o Alum Motors.

Re: Wow!! Dex-cool Vs. Green Antifreeze
My dealer, Rydells a very large GM dealer with many, many dealerships nationwide was changing from Dexcool to green in the pickups, aluminum head with cast iron block. Claimed dexcool was eating head gaskets in these engines. But only with that combo.

Re: Wow!! Dex-cool Vs. Green Antifreeze
there are other brands of good quality extended life coolants that dont have the mess that dex-cool makes, they claim that they are dex-cool compatable , the type that chrysler uses in their larger cars...

I have a '95 and flush the system myself every 2 years. I use the "Green" stuff but I make sure it reads - somewhere on the label - "applicable for Aluminum engines". Don't forget the 3 pellets that you have to add immediately after flushing the system.

Re: Wow!! Dex-cool Vs. Green Antifreeze
I will always use what GM recommends (excepts pads and rotors) on my Alero. My neighbor has a 1999 Malibu and decided to switch to the green stuff. A while later, the water pump failed.

Re: Wow!! Dex-cool Vs. Green Antifreeze
A few weeks ago I changed coolant, put new hoses everywhere, new serpintine and water pump belts, only to have my water pump go out a week later.
What a drag. Wanted to do the right thing so I would not have to be concerned about anything and then that happens. It's a 95 so I used the green and four bars leak gold pellets. The gold are different from the metal looking bars leak. They are made from ginger root and will only harden when the fibers hit dry air. The metal can plug up things that shouldn't be. |

![]() Seriously though, the GM pellets are supposed to be ground up walnut shells. |
